Drone roof surveys in Teynham Street

How a drone roof survey works in Teynham Street

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. It stays within sight for the whole flight, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. We never fly where it is not safe. We survey large and complex roofs, tall and steep roofs and chimney stacks, and common reasons people get in touch are slates or tiles shifted by high winds and ridge and hip pieces working loose.

In a small place like Teynham Street, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Drone roof surveys around Teynham Street

Teynham Street lies within about 2 miles of the sea, where wind off the sea can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, so the weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead. Across Kent, older roofs are often handmade clay or peg tiles, and tile-hanging on upper walls is a familiar sight. Kent’s older buildings take in oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses as well. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from the ground, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Anyone responsible for a site like Teynham Parochial Church of England Primary School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it. Belmont House and Gardens lies about 4.8 miles south, so building around Teynham Street goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself. If you live in an older home near Church of St Mary, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Teynham Street is about 3 miles north-west of Faversham, in Kent. Whether the building in Teynham Street is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Teynham Street is one of the towns and villages in Kent where we work for drone roof surveys. You can also see our page for Canterbury.

What happens if roof problems are left?

Photographing a roof from the air doesn’t touch it. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so the survey doesn’t create new problems. Older and listed buildings around Teynham Street may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Tips from our surveys

Nothing here needs a ladder. Our suggestions:

  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Allow time for permission if you’re in a flight restriction zone
  • Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit

With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. Drone photographs are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.

Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.

For landlords and managing agents

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays, which helps when tenants work during the week.

Buyers’ agents can book surveys on behalf of their clients. Reports are emailed, so they’re easy to pass on, photographs included.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Our drone check of a chimney is visual, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If the flue needs a specialist, we will tell you.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position.

Teynham Street questions

Is Teynham Street within the area you cover?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

Is my home in Teynham Street listed or in a conservation area?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

How do I book a survey in Teynham Street?

To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.

Is a drone roof survey a thermal survey?

The drone survey is a photographic inspection. Thermal imaging is carried out separately, and it’s part of the Premium Survey.

Are there drone restrictions in central London?

Parts of central London are restricted, including areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, and flights there need NATS permission. We check before every flight and seek permission where needed.

What about my neighbours’ privacy?

Privacy is taken seriously on every flight. We photograph your roof, not your neighbours’ property. It’s worth telling neighbours about the flight.

What insurance do you have?

We hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance.

What we do, step by step

It is useful to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. The visit normally takes about one to two hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. Older rural homes like those around Teynham Street can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A date is fixed, with a fallback in case the weather turns.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

Before the survey

  • Point out any leaks or damp patches
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building

Advice

What this survey cannot tell you

This isn’t a RICS building survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
