Drone roof survey in Whitley Wood, Reading
We take a careful look at the roof at your property in Whitley Wood, with photographs and a written report.
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
- Chimney tops in poor condition
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
What happens on the day
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings as a photo-illustrated written report. As for time on site, most surveys take an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. A visit to Whitley Wood is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed ahead of time. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it is checked too.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Keep pets in another room
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street

Advice
Drone roof survey in Whitley Wood: what you get
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. Where a flight is not possible, we explain why. If you’re worried about wind damage high on the roof and lead work pulling away at abutments, we can find out what’s behind it.
Around Whitley Wood, plenty of roofs are low enough to see partly from the garden or the street. The parts you can’t see, such as rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. Both depend on the weather on the day. Even so, a close-up image frequently shows wear on ridges and flashings that a view from the ground misses.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, because a photo of a cracked flashing says more than a paragraph. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Whitley Wood
It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. You get photos of every part we can see, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order. With lower homes, common in places like Whitley Wood, there is little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.
Prices start from £150, with VAT included, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400, both including VAT. You’ll know the price for your survey before booking.

Checking the roof from ground level
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Whitley Wood questions
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Whitley Wood?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.
Do you cover smaller places like Whitley Wood?
Yes, Whitley Wood is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Let us know which days suit you when you book.
What does the report include?
A written report with photos, covering the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend, in order of urgency where relevant. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
What insurance do you have?
We are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
That depends on the survey. Inside the building and in the loft, we need someone to let us in.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. Our survey is a roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey of the whole building. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
What this survey cannot tell you
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- Close-up photos of next door’s property
- Flights in a restricted zone without permission
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.
What this survey covers
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Large and complex roofs
- Fragile roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Tall and steep roofs
What affects the cost of drone roof surveys
What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. The main factors are:
- The roof’s overall size
- Which survey package you book
- The shape of the roof and its details
- Height and safe access
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.
Getting in touch
When you call or email, these details help:
- Dates you’re working to, like exchange
- Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
Every survey is priced before it is booked, so you know where you stand. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. For a price for your roof, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Tips that help
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Some pointers:
- Keep pets indoors during the flight
- Make sure there’s room outside for the drone to take off
- Let us know about any leaks or concerns
- Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
With the Premium Survey, the report arrives the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible.
Have leaves and moss cleared from gutters, valleys and outlets, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Blocked hidden gutters cause many leaks.
Airspace, weather and Whitley Wood roofs
Stratfield Saye House, about 4.9 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Whitley Wood. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.
Take a building like Geoffrey Field Infant School: big roofs are where photos from the air and thermal images show the most at once. For an older house near a landmark such as St Paul's Church, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement. Shop and office owners around The Oracle may find that large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from the air or with a thermal camera.
