Need a gutter survey in Whitley Wood?

The survey, step by step

Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. The survey normally takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. For a survey in Whitley Wood, we agree the time, the access and parking before the day. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. If there are outbuildings or garages you want looked at, mention them.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
  2. We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
  3. Outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows are inspected.
  4. We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
  5. You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.

Preparing for the visit

  • Keep pets in another room
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building

How to book

Booking is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or send us an email, let us know about the property and we will explain which survey suits. The price is agreed up front.

Gutter survey in Whitley Wood

Gutters carry rain off the roof and away from the walls. When they block, leak or lose their fall, the water goes where it shouldn’t, often down the brickwork or into the building. We check the full rainwater system above ground, from eaves gutters and valleys to outlets, hoppers and downpipes. The findings go into a written report with photos. Common reasons to book are overflowing eaves gutters and water backing up from a hidden gutter, across parapet and box gutters, downpipes and eaves gutters.

Around Whitley Wood, gardens, hedges and nearby trees can mean leaves and moss end up on roofs and in gutters. Once gutters and outlets block, water spills over and soaks the walls. A report spots that kind of slow problem before it becomes damp inside. Plants growing from a gutter or moss on the tiles are signs worth noting from ground level.

Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

What a gutter survey does not cover

In fairness, a roof survey has limits:

  • Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
  • Blockages deep inside downpipes
  • Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards

If you are not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Eaves gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Downpipes
  • Valley gutters

Checking the roof from ground level

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

Signs you need a gutter survey in Whitley Wood

Valley, parapet and box gutters are frequently lined with lead or a sheet material. When a lining splits or an outlet blocks, the water can come inside as there is nowhere harmless for it to go. Lead linings can also be stolen.

Common reasons to book include:

  • Gutters full of debris and silt
  • Joints that drip after rain
  • Downpipes that are split or coming away
  • Overflowing valley or parapet gutters

If you run a business near The Oracle, a roof report helps plan work around trading rather than after a leak.

What to check before booking

  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • What happens after the report arrives
  • Their insurance cover
  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID

Gutter surveys in Whitley Wood: local notes

Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, with flat-roofed extensions, dormers and garages common everywhere. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first. Stratfield Saye House, about 4.9 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Whitley Wood. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

Anyone responsible for a site like Geoffrey Field Infant School will know that its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. Living close to Pearman's Copse is pleasant, but mature trees mean leaves in gutters and valleys each autumn, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

Whitley Wood is about 2 miles south-west of Earley, in Reading. Houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings in Whitley Wood can all book gutter surveys, with a written report and photographs every time. Our Reading coverage includes Whitley Wood and the places around it.

Common questions in Whitley Wood

How do I find out if my home in Whitley Wood is listed?

You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Can a landlord with a rental near Reading Green Park station book a roof survey?

Yes, rented property is part of what we cover. You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and some details.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it helps and it’s safe, yes. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We’re a CAA-registered drone operator.

Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?

Overflowing gutters often lead to damp walls, and the survey looks for that. If the evidence points elsewhere, we will say so, based on what we can see.

How quickly is the report sent?

Basic reports arrive within 48 hours, Standard reports in 24–48 hours and Premium reports on the same day. All of them come by email.

Is Whitley Wood in your area?

Yes. We cover Whitley Wood and the rest of Reading. For a price, call 07833 053749 or email us.

Why get it checked now?

When a valley or parapet gutter blocks, the water has nowhere safe to go. It can back up into the roof space and the rooms below normally during the worst downpours. Having them checked before autumn and winter makes sense. Around Whitley Wood, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, especially where trees overhang. It’s easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
