Common questions in Hamble-le-Rice
Is the coastal weather around Hamble-le-Rice hard on roofs?
It can do. Hamble-le-Rice is within about 1 mile of the sea, and coastal roofs tend to see faster wear on metal parts and more wind lifting loose pieces.
Will you come out to Hamble-le-Rice?
Yes. Hamble-le-Rice is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when you book.
Do you climb onto every roof?
Not always. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where it applies let us see the rest.
Are you structural engineers?
No. We’re roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it does not include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.
Do you look in the loft space?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
Are you insured?
Our surveys are covered by professional indemnity and public liability insurance. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
Can you test a green or ballasted roof?
Sometimes. The layers on top and the build-up below decide it and parts may need to be lifted. We talk this through first.
Electronic leak detection in Hamble-le-Rice
There are different ELD methods. Low-voltage methods usually need a wet roof surface, while high-voltage testing needs a dry, exposed membrane. Which one suits depends on the membrane and the layers of the roof, and we will explain our choice. If neither method suits your roof, we’ll tell you at the outset. If you’ve noticed leaks under green or ballasted roofs and new roofs to check before paving or planting, we can find out what’s behind it.
Outbuildings, garden rooms and garages in places like Hamble-le-Rice often have flat roofs of their own. They’re easy to forget, but water through a garage roof can spoil whatever is stored inside. If you want them looked at too, mention them as you book. Felt, rubber and GRP coverings on garages and outbuildings age in just the same way as the main roof’s.
We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, along with how urgent it is.

How we price electronic leak detection
The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:
- The size of the roof
- House, block, shop or office
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. We quote electronic leak detection for each roof, as the method and time depend on the roof.
What we need to know
A little information up front helps. Please include:
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from the ground or a window
To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and what you’d like to know about the roof. We will confirm the price before you book.

What else we do in Hamble-le-Rice
Why get it checked now?
Some breaches are too small to see. ELD picks up breaches a visual check might miss, on suitable membranes. Around Hamble-le-Rice, a leak in an older house can soak into timbers and plaster, which is far harder to put right than the roof fault itself.
All our prices include VAT. We quote electronic leak detection for each roof, as the method and time depend on the roof. We confirm the price for your survey before booking.

Honest limits
In fairness, a roof survey has limits:
- Fixing the holes we find
- Areas we cannot reach or that can’t be tested
- How wet the insulation is
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Roof terraces and balconies
- Green roofs
- Liquid-applied waterproofing
- Commercial flat roofs
- Flat roof membranes
- Single-ply roofs
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
What you cannot do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way, and a fall can be serious. That is where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where it applies.
How the survey changes by roof type
EPDM rubber roofs
EPDM rubber roofs frequently last 30–50 years, but punctures and seam failures still happen.
Inverted and paved roofs
Paving and terraces cover the membrane. Suitability depends on the layers.
Flat roofs in Hamble-le-Rice
Hamble-le-Rice lies within about 1 mile of the sea, where sea air brings more salt and stronger wind than inland. Wind can catch loose edges and trims on a flat roof, and salt air is hard on metal trims, flashings and fixings. About 4.4 miles north-west lies Medieval Merchant's House, a reminder of how long the area around Hamble-le-Rice has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first.
If you let a flat or house near Hamble station, flat roofs over rear additions and dormers in rented property are worth checking between tenancies. Anyone responsible for a site like Hamble Primary School will know that schools and public buildings often have big flat roofs, and their outlets and upstands need regular checks. If you live in an older home near Church of St Andrew, later flat-roofed additions are common on older houses, and their edges and upstands often show the first signs of wear.

What happens on the day
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take as long as needed for the membrane area and the build-up, which we set out in the quote. Being in a smaller place like Hamble-le-Rice doesn’t change how the visit works: outside, inside and from any safe vantage point, in that order. Point out any stains, cracks or loose pieces you’ve spotted.
- You let us know about the roof and where water is showing.
- The roof is assessed for suitability first.
- The test method is chosen to suit the roof.
- The membrane is tested and breaches are found.
- You get a report with photos of each breach.
Before the survey
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
