Stonehill: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Stonehill is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Will you come out to Stonehill?
Yes, Stonehill is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.
What does electronic leak detection do?
The waterproofing membrane normally stops an electrical current, so wherever there is a hole, it passes through. That is how we locate breaches you can’t see.
What’s the best way to book?
It’s easiest to phone 07833 053749 or email us. Give us the address and a few details about the roof. Surveys run seven days a week.
Does the weather affect the survey?
It can, depending on the survey. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. If the conditions aren’t right, we will talk to you about another date.
Does ELD work under paving or planting?
It can be possible, depending on the roof. What sits on the membrane affects the method, so we check the build-up first.
What does the report include?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, backed by photographs. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.
Electronic leak detection for homes and businesses in Stonehill
ELD can be carried out in more than one way. Low-voltage testing is usually done with the surface wet and high-voltage methods need the membrane dry and exposed. Which one suits depends on the membrane and the layers of the roof, and we will explain our choice. If neither method suits your roof, we will tell you before any testing starts. Common reasons to book are leaks showing away from the breach and new roofs to check before paving or planting, across roof terraces and balconies, commercial flat roofs and single-ply roofs.
Some older homes in villages like Stonehill are listed or in a conservation area, and that can affect how an extension roof or dormer is re-covered. Check with the council before planning any change of material. Finding out what state the roof is in gives you the facts to plan with. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest.
Pictures do a lot of the work in our reports, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

What else we do in Stonehill
When you need someone else
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Carrying out the repair work
- Water entering through details rather than the membrane
- Moisture spread under the membrane
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.
What we check
- Single-ply roofs
- Flat roof membranes
- Commercial flat roofs
- Roof terraces and balconies
- Green roofs
- Liquid-applied waterproofing
What we do, step by step
The visit has one job: to look at the flat roof membrane as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit usually takes as long as needed for the membrane area and the build-up, which we set out in the quote. Around Stonehill, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We start by finding out what the roof is made of and where it leaks.
- We confirm whether the roof is suitable for electronic testing.
- The method depends on the membrane and what sits above and below it.
- We test the membrane and find where current is passing through it.
- You get a report showing where each breach is, for your roofer to repair.
Preparing for the visit
- Buyers: confirm access with the estate agent or seller
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
How to book
Photos help, if you have them. Pictures from the ground or a window are fine; never climb up to get a better view. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email.

Prices for electronic leak detection in Stonehill
When we price a survey, we consider:
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- House, block, shop or office
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You will know the figure before booking.
What to let us know when you get in touch
A little information up front helps. It helps to include:
- The type of building and roof, like pitched or flat
- The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
- Where the property is, with the postcode
A quick phone call is typically the easiest start: call 07833 053749 or send us an email, and we will ask about the building and what you need. The price is agreed before a date is set.
Local flat roofs in Stonehill
Botleys Mansion, about 1.4 miles north-east, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Stonehill. If yours is one of the older homes, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. In Surrey, older roofs are often handmade clay tile, with tile-hanging on many upper walls. Some old buildings in Surrey and Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. Flat roofs on extensions, dormers, garages and business units are found alongside them almost everywhere.
Take an older house close to Christ Church: later flat-roofed additions are common on older houses, and their edges and upstands often show the first signs of wear. If you run a business near The Peacocks, outlets and upstands on commercial flat roofs are the places to check before trouble starts. Landlords with a home close to Longcross station may find that the flat roof over a let home is worth a look before it becomes a tenant complaint.

Different roofs, different checks
Inverted and paved roofs
If the build-up rules out ELD, we will say so.
EPDM rubber roofs
EPDM is a long-lasting flat roof membrane, but punctures and seam failures still happen.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
What happens if roof problems are left?
Testing a new membrane before it’s covered is easier than tracing a leak later. Once layers are added, finding a breach is harder. For an older or listed building in a place like Stonehill, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so leaving a defect until it is urgent leaves less time to plan.
All our prices include VAT. We quote electronic leak detection for each roof, as the method and time depend on the roof. You will know the price for the job before booking.
