FAQs for Whitehall
Is Whitehall in the area you cover?
Yes, Whitehall is one of the places we work. Every survey there gets the same written report with photographs.
How do I find out if my home in Whitehall is listed?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
We carry out surveys on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. To find a day that suits you, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
What happens after the survey?
We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.
What’s in the report?
It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, and ends with what we recommend. Points are put by urgency where it matters.
Can you survey in bad weather?
It depends on the weather and the survey. Strong wind or a downpour can make access unsafe and ground a drone, and we’d agree another day.
Electronic leak detection in Whitehall: what you get
There are different ELD methods. Low-voltage testing is normally done with the surface wet, while high-voltage testing needs a dry, exposed membrane. The right method depends on the membrane and the build-up of the roof and we explain which we’ll use. If neither method suits your roof, we’ll tell you before any testing starts. We are frequently asked to look into leaks that return after repairs and leaks at pipes, outlets or fixings, across liquid-applied waterproofing, green roofs and roof terraces and balconies.
Somewhere as small as Whitehall, flat roofs tend to be on extensions, garages and converted outbuildings. The checks are the same as anywhere: the covering, the edges, the upstands and where water drains away. We simply plan the journey and access in advance. If there are outbuildings or garages with flat roofs, mention them when booking.
Findings are set out part by part, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, each with a short note and a photograph. You will see the good as well as the bad.

How it works
The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the flat roof membrane as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit usually takes more time on a big roof than a small one, with the construction of the roof playing a part too. Around Whitehall, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We agree the area to be tested.
- We get the roof ready for testing.
- We work across the roof with the test equipment.
- Each breach found is located and recorded.
- The report is sent for your roofer to act on.
Getting ready for the survey
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
Booking a survey
If you have photos of the roof, send them over. Pictures from ground level or a window are fine, and please don’t climb up for a closer look. To send them or to book, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

Tips from our surveys
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Check new waterproofing before handover
- Note where leaks show inside and when
- Do not keep patching the same spot
- Don’t leave water getting in
Where the evidence points to walls, copings or rooflights, we’ll note it, so other causes can be checked.
Act on leaks quickly. The longer water gets in, the more insulation and decking can be affected.

Why it’s worth a survey now in Whitehall
Some flat roof leaks come from walls or details. ELD helps rule the membrane in or out so attention can go to the right place. Outbuildings and barns around Whitehall are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so the price reflects that. The price is confirmed before you book.

- What kind of property and roof it is
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window

What we look for on each type of roof
Inverted and paved roofs
A terrace or paved roof hides the waterproofing. Suitability depends on the layers.
Green and ballasted roofs
Parts of the covering may have to come up. We discuss this before quoting.
Local flat roofs in Whitehall
Listing and conservation areas can both shape what roof work is allowed on an older home. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list. Older houses across Sussex often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. A few old Sussex buildings still carry heavy Horsham stone slabs. Alongside them, flat-roofed extensions, dormers, garages and commercial units are common almost everywhere.
Anyone responsible for a site like Shipley CofE Primary School will know that a large flat roof with plenty of outlets and rooflights has many places where a membrane can fail. For an older house near a landmark like The Church of St Mary the Virgin, the joins between later flat roofs and the old walls are where problems usually start.
Whitehall is about 6 miles south-west of Horsham, in West Sussex. Whether the building in Whitehall is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, the roof can be surveyed. What we’re asked to look at in Whitehall
Work on the roof can damage a membrane. Fixings, equipment and foot traffic can leave small holes.
A survey can pick up problems such as:
- Punctures from foot traffic or tools
- Leaks at pipes, outlets or fixings
- Leaks that return after repairs
- Leaks through a flat roof with no obvious cause
If you own a rental within reach of Billingshurst station, flat roofs over rear additions and dormers in rented property are worth checking between tenancies.
