Gutter survey in Fox Street, Essex
Not sure what state the gutter is in? You can book a gutter survey in Fox Street and across Essex.
- Gutters full of debris and silt
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
- Cracked or loose downpipes
Gutter survey in Fox Street: what you get
We look at the rainwater system above ground level: gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows. It is not a CCTV drain survey, so we can’t see inside underground pipes. Where water seems to be backing up from below ground, we will say so in the report, with a suggestion to book a separate drain survey. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. We are frequently asked to look into gutters packed with leaves or moss and fascia boards damaged by overflowing water, on fascias and soffits, valley gutters and parapet and box gutters.
Some older homes in villages like Fox Street are listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials can be used when work is done, so check with the council before planning anything. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

How the survey changes by roof type
Aluminium and other metal gutters
On big buildings, one blocked outlet can affect a long run, so we check the outlets carefully.
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
Some older roofs have a central valley running to the back, and a blockage there can overflow inside. We check it where it’s safe to see.

Common questions in Fox Street
Do roofs near the sea, like those around Fox Street, take more of a battering?
Near the coast, roofs face more wind and more salt than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces.
Will you come out to Fox Street?
Yes, Fox Street is covered. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We point out what can be seen, such as sagging or deflection, but we do not carry out calculations or give an engineer’s opinion. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. It can sit alongside a RICS survey if you want both.
Will I get photos?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.
Do I need to be at home?
Not always. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
What does a gutter survey cost?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. The price depends on the size of the building and how easy the gutters are to see. For a price, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
Tips from our surveys
Small things make a difference, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:
- Book gutter clearing once a year, more frequently near trees
- Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain
- Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
Landlords and managing agents can keep the report with the building’s records to help plan maintenance. Photos make it easier to explain the work to owners, tenants or contractors.
Don’t forget valley, parapet and box gutters. They collect leaves and silt just like eaves gutters but they’re much harder to spot, so ask for them to be included when gutters are cleared.
What a gutter survey looks like in Fox Street
Fox Street is within about 5 miles of the coast, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Weatherboarded walls and clay tile roofs are typical of older Essex buildings, with post-war and more recent estates making up much of the newer housing. Whichever you have, the details that tend to fail before the covering itself get the closest look.
If you look after a building such as Roach Vale Primary School, its roofs, gutters and any chimneys need the same checks as a house’s, just on a bigger scale. If you let a flat or house near Hythe station, a roof report between tenancies helps plan work before a small defect becomes a tenant’s leak. Trees in and around Welsh Wood shed leaves that can end up in nearby gutters, so outlets and downpipes are worth watching.

How the survey works
When we arrive, we start by asking what you’ve noticed and what you want to find out. We then inspect everything that can be seen safely, using the ground, windows, the loft and a drone where applicable. The survey usually takes an hour or two at a typical home, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Fox Street can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
- We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- The roof space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- A written report with photos and recommendations follows.
How to prepare
- If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- Jot down any questions you want answered

Advice
DIY checks: what’s safe
A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are frequently out of sight.
Why get it checked now?
Going up a ladder to check your own gutters carries real risk. From ground level you can spot drips and overflows but hidden gutters are another matter. We inspect as far as it is safe to see and put it in writing. In a small place like Fox Street, homes can be exposed to wind and rain, which finds any gap, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.
Price depends partly on the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.
