Independent gutter surveys in Hill Head

What we do, step by step

Time on site depends on the size and shape of the roof, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. If you have questions on the day, just ask. Somewhere as small as Hill Head, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
  3. Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
  4. Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
  5. A written report with photos and recommendations follows.

Before the survey

  • Let us know about parking before the day
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in

Our price is from £150, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, so call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the details.

Advice

About our gutter survey in Hill Head

This survey covers rainwater above ground, from the gutters down to where the downpipes meet the ground. It is not a CCTV drain survey, so we can’t see inside underground pipes. If the problem looks like a blocked or broken drain below ground, the report will say so, so you can get the drains checked separately. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. Typical surveys look at fascia boards damaged by overflowing water and dripping or leaking gutter joints, on parapet and box gutters, outlets and hoppers and eaves gutters.

Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.

If any part of the gutter couldn’t be seen safely, we say so in the report. That way, it is clear what was covered and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

Checking the roof from ground level

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Keep a simple record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Share it with us when booking and it will help the survey.

Hill Head homes and their roofs

The coast is about 1 mile or less from Hill Head, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Metal fixings and flashings corrode faster in salt air, while gales work at loose ridges, slates and tiles. Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there.

If you own a rental within reach of Fareham station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. If you run a business near Fareham Shopping Centre, a written record of the roof’s condition helps you plan maintenance rather than react to leaks. If yours is one of the older homes in the streets near Holy Rood Church, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.

Hill Head is about 3 miles south-west of Fareham, in Hampshire. Houses, flats, blocks and commercial buildings in Hill Head can all book gutter surveys. Hill Head is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire where we work for gutter surveys. Portsmouth is in our area too.

Tips from our surveys

A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Some tips:

  • Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
  • Keep climbers away from the eaves
  • Check downpipe clips are holding
  • Get the gutters cleaned out every year

Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.

Look at the gutters from indoors or the ground when it pours. Water spilling over the edge or out of a joint is a sign that something needs attention before damage builds up.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Clearing gutters removes the debris, but it does not tell you why a gutter overflows. We also check the falls, joints, brackets, outlets and downpipes to show whether something else is wrong. In a place like Hill Head, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. A quick look before winter can save a lot.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

Questions from Hill Head

Can a landlord with a rental near Fareham station book a roof survey?

Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. Just phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the details.

Is my home in Hill Head listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Does the season matter for a gutter survey?

Whenever suits you. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it’s best not to wait, because the walls take the water.

Do you check valley and parapet gutters?

Yes, as far as they can be seen safely. We use the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it’s safe, and by drone where it’s applicable.

Will you fly a drone over my roof?

Where it helps and it is safe, yes. Flights depend on the weather on the day and airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.

Will I get photos?

Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and the report uses them to show each finding.

Surveys for landlords and agents in Hill Head

We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, including offices, shops and units. Larger roofs take longer, and they’re priced for the size.

Roof problems in a rented home affect tenants as well as the building. A survey shows what needs attention, so you can plan the work around your tenants.

How we price gutter surveys

Prices vary from roof to roof, for these reasons:

  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • How big the roof is
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, from £400 with VAT included. We can help you choose the package that fits what you need to know.

Helping us price your survey

A little information up front helps. It helps to include:

  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Anything about access we should know
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside

Not sure which survey you need? It is easiest to call 07833 053749 or send us an email and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We’ll talk you through the options and what they cost.
