Gutter surveys near Howegreen

How a gutter survey works in Howegreen

Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Buildings near trees collect more, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. The photos show you exactly what we found. Blocked gutters are easy to put off, but they rarely get better. Common reasons to book are soffits marked by water and choked outlets or hopper heads, across eaves gutters, fascias and soffits and downpipes.

Somewhere as small as Howegreen, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are frequently old. We report on what can safely be seen, and thatch is a specialist material. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs frequently need the most attention.

Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

Howegreen homes and their roofs

Howegreen lies within about 4 miles of the sea, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, while driving rain finds any gap. Historic houses such as Danbury Place, about 4.9 miles north-west, show how far back building in the area around Howegreen goes. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you let a flat or house near North Fambridge station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Purleigh Community Primary School, large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. If you live in an older home near Parish Church of All Saints, its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.

What a survey costs

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • Chimneys, valleys, parapets and other details
  • Commercial roofs and larger buildings
  • The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely

One thing that affects the price is the package: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 or Premium from £400, all including VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Getting in touch

You don’t need to know any roofing terms. It is enough to tell us:

  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Why you want a survey: buying, a leak, a storm or new work
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is

Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the details.

What a gutter survey doesn’t cover

Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:

  • Asbestos testing of old gutters, downpipes or soffits
  • Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
  • Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. The full list of what we check.

What we check

  • Fascias and soffits
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Eaves gutters
  • Downpipes
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Valley gutters

The survey, step by step

A survey visit follows a simple order: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photographs as we go and record our findings for the written report. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for a house, or half a day or so for a commercial building. Older roofs in small places like Howegreen can have low, tight loft spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.

  1. We ask about overflows, damp or leaks you’ve noticed.
  2. Gutters, downpipes, fascias and soffits are inspected from safe vantage points.
  3. We check hidden gutters, such as valleys and parapets, where it’s safe to see them.
  4. We look in the loft space, where there is safe access, for signs of water getting in.
  5. You get a written report with photographs and recommendations.

DIY checks: what’s safe

It’s useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book, as it helps us focus the survey.

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Tips that help

Here are a few things we’d tell any owner:

  • Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
  • Check for spilling water in a downpour
  • Book gutter clearing once a year, more often near trees
  • Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain

Where the evidence points to drains below ground, the report says so, so a drain survey can be arranged. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.

Get trees and climbers near the eaves trimmed back using someone with the right kit. Fewer leaves in the gutters means fewer blockages.

Howegreen: your questions answered

Is Howegreen within the area you cover?

Yes, Howegreen is covered. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Do roofs near the sea, like those around Howegreen, take more of a battering?

Frequently, yes. Within about 4 miles of the sea, as Howegreen is, metal fixings wear faster and gales find any loose ridge or slate.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Yes, where it is applicable. Whether we can fly on the day depends on the weather and the airspace rules, and we check for restrictions near airports before flying. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID.

Can you tell me if my old gutters contain asbestos?

No. We don’t carry out asbestos testing. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?

Whenever suits you. If water is already spilling over, book sooner rather than later as overflowing water can damage walls.

How do I arrange a gutter survey in Howegreen?

Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address. After a few questions, we confirm the price and fix a day, weekday or weekend.

How much time does the visit need?

For a house, expect about 1–2 hours on site, and longer for larger or complex roofs.

Why act early in Howegreen

Going up a ladder to check your own gutters carries real risk. You can see drips and overflows from the ground, but valleys, parapets and box gutters are hard to see. Our survey covers what can be seen safely and records it with photos. Outbuildings and barns around Howegreen are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. It’s worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Every price we give includes VAT. Our price is from £150, including VAT. We confirm the exact price before booking.
