Roughdown questions

I let a flat near Netley station. Can you check the roof?

Of course. We just need to know who will give access, and we can send the report to you or your agent.

Is the coastal weather around Roughdown hard on roofs?

Generally, yes: wind and salt air take more of a toll near the sea. Ridges, verges, flashings and fixings are where it usually shows, and Roughdown is within about 2 miles of the coast.

What does the report include?

It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos. Points are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?

There is no wrong time. If water is already spilling over, book sooner rather than later, because the walls take the water.

Is Roughdown in your area?

Yes. We cover Roughdown and the rest of Hampshire, as part of our work across London and South East England. For a price, ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form.

How soon will I get the report?

That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.

Are you insured?

Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability, and details are available on request.

Gutter survey in Roughdown

People book a gutter survey when gutters overflow, when damp appears or before the wetter months. Landlords and managing agents use the report to plan upkeep and buyers sometimes want the gutters looked at before they exchange. Whoever books, we inspect and report in the same way, with photos and written recommendations. We survey on weekdays and at weekends. If you’ve noticed downpipes that are split or coming away and water spilling over the gutter edge, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on outlets and hoppers, valley gutters and parapet and box gutters alike.

In a village or hamlet like Roughdown, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, frequently with chimneys that have stood a long time. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. On older roofs, it’s typically the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.

The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Basic reports come within 48 hours, Standard within 24–48 hours and Premium on the day.

What a gutter survey looks like in Roughdown

Roughdown is within about 2 miles of the coast, and places near the sea get more salt in the air and more wind than inland. Salt corrodes metal fixings and flashings, and wind lifts loose slates, tiles and ridge pieces, and driving rain gets into whatever gap is left. Beaulieu Palace House, about 2.7 miles west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Roughdown. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead.

If you own a rental within reach of Netley station, the gap between tenancies is a good time to have the roof looked at. Anyone responsible for a site like Blackfield Primary School will know that a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.

Roughdown is about 3 miles south of Hythe, in Hampshire. Roughdown gets the same service as everywhere else we work: a careful inspection, photographs and a written report. Roughdown is one of the towns and villages in Hampshire we cover. You can also see our page for Southampton.

What you can safely check yourself

It helps to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from ground level and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Practical tips

Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out as worth the effort:

  • Book gutter clearing once a year, more often near trees
  • Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
  • Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
  • Have overhanging branches cut back

If we think the problem lies underground, we’ll say so, so you can arrange a drain survey. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.

Deal with drips, sags and loose downpipes early. They tend to get worse and spilled water harms brickwork and woodwork.

What happens if roof problems are left?

A gutter clear-out takes the leaves away but it will not explain why water keeps spilling over. Our survey also looks at falls, joints, brackets, outlets and downpipes, so you know whether there is more to it. For older village homes like those around Roughdown, the right replacement materials aren’t always easy to find quickly. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, inc. VAT. The roof’s size, height and access matter as well.

Honest limits

Our findings are based on what we can see safely on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:

  • Blockages deep inside downpipes
  • Gutters out of sight from each safe vantage point
  • Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will point you to the right survey before you book. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Eaves gutters
  • Valley gutters
  • Downpipes
  • Parapet and box gutters

How it works

Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. You’re welcome to ask questions while we’re there. For a village or hamlet like Roughdown, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it’s safe.

  1. You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
  2. The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
  3. Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can safely be seen.
  4. The loft space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
  5. You receive a report with photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • If you’re buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • Show us where any leaks or stains appear
