Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Standford

This survey covers rainwater above ground: gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows. It’s not a CCTV drain survey, so we can’t see inside underground pipes. If the problem looks like a blocked or broken drain below ground, the report will say so, so you can get the drains checked separately. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. If you’ve noticed hoppers and outlets full of debris and brackets that have dropped or snapped, we can find out what’s behind it, on valley gutters, fascias and soffits and downpipes alike.

Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are frequently where weather gets in first.

Where we can’t see part of the gutter, the report says so. You’ll know exactly what was inspected and what wasn’t, and what we’d suggest next.

What a survey costs

To price your survey, we check:

  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Roof area
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Gutter survey starts from £150, including VAT.

What to tell us when you contact us

You do not need to know any roofing terms. It’s enough to tell us:

  • What made you get in touch
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
  • Where the property is, with the postcode

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To find a date that works for you, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

Standford questions

I let a flat near Liphook station. Can you check the roof?

Yes, that’s a common request. We just need to know who will give access, and we can send the report to you or your agent.

Will you come out to Standford?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.

Can you inspect my roof with a drone?

Where it helps and the rules allow, yes. Our sub-250g drone is flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.

How long does a gutter survey take?

It normally takes between one and two hours at most homes, and longer for a large or complex roof. You’ll know roughly how long when we arrange the visit.

Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?

Whenever suits you. If you’ve already seen a gutter overflowing, it is best not to wait as overflowing water can damage walls.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.

Do you survey at weekends?

Yes. Surveys are carried out seven days a week. To find a day that suits, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email.

What a gutter survey does not cover

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
  • What’s behind fascias and inside walls
  • Hidden sections we cannot view safely

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will point you to the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Eaves gutters
  • Parapet and box gutters
  • Outlets and hoppers
  • Downpipes
  • Fascias and soffits
  • Valley gutters

The survey, step by step

Where it is relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit usually takes between one and two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Around Standford, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.

  1. First, we agree the areas to focus on.
  2. We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
  3. We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
  4. Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
  5. You get photos and written recommendations, prioritised where relevant.

Preparing for the visit

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Make sure we can get to the back of the property

Useful tips for Standford property owners

You don’t need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:

  • Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
  • Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
  • Book gutter clearing once a year, more often near trees
  • Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain

If we think the problem lies underground, we will say so, so a drain survey can be arranged. Anything else we notice on the roof, as far as we can see it, is noted too.

Hidden gutters need clearing too. They block in the same way as the gutters you can see but you can’t check them from the street, so check they’re included in any clearing work.

Why get it checked now?

Water spilling from a gutter runs down and soaks the wall below. Left for months, that can lead to damp inside, worn pointing and rotten timber. Spotting the problem early tends to mean a simpler fix. Around Standford, older homes often have old roof timbers, where water from a failed roof can cause rot if it’s left.

Prices quoted always include VAT, and the written report is part of the package. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Gutter surveys in Standford: local notes

Older buildings may be listed or sit in a conservation area. Historic England’s list shows listed buildings, and the council can say whether a street is in a conservation area. Re-roofing in different materials may need permission there. Thatch survives on some older buildings in Hampshire’s villages. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.

Anyone responsible for a site like Weyford Nursery and Primary School will know that large buildings have long gutter runs and big roofs that need checking like any other. Take an older house close to St Mark's Sacred Church: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. If you let a flat or house near Liphook station, a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant.
