Gutter survey in Up Somborne: what you get
We carry out gutter surveys in Up Somborne as part of our cover across London and South East England. On the day, we inspect what can safely be seen from the ground, windows, the loft space and the roof where it’s safe. Time on site typically takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. The written report follows, with photographs and recommendations. Common reasons to book are overflowing eaves gutters and hoppers and outlets full of debris, on eaves gutters, parapet and box gutters and fascias and soffits.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, so ridges, chimney stacks, flashings and gutters work hard. Older walls take a long time to dry once water gets in. A written report sets out what to deal with and in what order. Lead flashings and old chimney stacks are frequently where weather gets in first.
The written findings come by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Honest limits
Our survey is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
- What’s hidden inside a downpipe
If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey. What a survey covers and does not.

Prices for gutter surveys in Up Somborne
When we price a survey, we consider:
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- How tall the building is and how easy the roof is to see
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.
What to tell us when you get in touch
To price your survey accurately, we’ll ask about:
- The address and postcode of the property
- Any marks or damp showing indoors
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
- What’s prompted the survey
Unsure which package suits your roof? It is easiest to ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and describe the roof and what’s worrying you. We’ll explain the options and the price.
Can I check my roof myself?
Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.
How it works
Once we have finished looking, we write up our findings in a report with photographs. On timing, it usually takes about one to two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. Older roofs in small places like Up Somborne can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it is safe.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.
How to prepare
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Point out any leaks or damp patches

Gutter surveys in Up Somborne: local notes
Some Hampshire villages still have thatched roofs. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Each of these coverings has its own weak points, from fixings and valleys to flashings, chimneys and gutters. Before planning roof work on an older home, find out whether it is listed or in a conservation area. Listed building consent covers changes to a listed building’s special interest, and an Article 4 direction can bring extra controls in a conservation area.
Take an older house close to All Saints Church: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs. Around Up Somborne, as everywhere, small roof faults are simplest to sort before they let water in.

Tips that help
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:
- Have overhanging branches cut back
- Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
- Don’t climb a ladder to look in the gutters
- Get the gutters cleaned out every year
The report comes with photos and recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. Share it with a contractor of your choice so they can see exactly what’s needed.
Have overhanging branches and climbing plants cut back from the roof using someone with the right kit. Fewer leaves in the gutters means fewer blockages.
Different roofs, different checks
Fascias and soffits
Some older soffits may contain asbestos. Any we think could be are flagged for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check.
Cast iron gutters
Lots of period homes still have cast iron rainwater goods. Kept painted, they can last a long time but corrode once the paint wears off.
Common questions in Up Somborne
Do you cover Up Somborne?
We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Is Up Somborne within the area you cover?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Will the survey check for asbestos?
No, that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor. On buildings from before 2000, we flag materials that could contain it so you can arrange that check.
Will you check the loft?
Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. Inside, we look for damp, staining, gaps and sagging.
Is a CCTV drain survey included?
No, CCTV drain work isn’t part of this survey. We check gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and note any sign that the drains need checking.
