New roof snagging in Chilgrove: what you get
Householders book snagging after a re-roof or roof replacement and some new-build owners want their roof looked at. We inspect each roof as far as safe access allows, from ground level, vantage points, the roof space and the roof where safe. A photo report follows, ready to share with your roofer or builder. We survey ridges and verges, new-build homes and flashings and valleys, and common reasons people get in touch are debris left in gutters or valleys and flashings not properly dressed or fixed.
Being in a small place like Chilgrove makes no difference to the inspection itself: the journey, parking and access are simply agreed ahead of time. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages with roofs you’d like looked at as you book. Buyers and owners of new roofs get the same approach as anywhere. Weekday and weekend visits are both available.
Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, along with how urgent it is.

The survey, step by step
We work from the outside in: outside views come first, then the roof space if there is safe access. In total, it takes about 1–2 hours for most houses, and longer for a large or complex roof. Older roofs in small places like Chilgrove can have low, tight loft spaces, so let us know about the loft hatch and any ladder. We only go where it’s safe.
- First, you tell us what the roofer did and any concerns you have.
- The new coverings, ridge, hips and verges are inspected where it’s safe to see them.
- Valleys, flashings, gutters and the underlay at the eaves are looked at.
- Where it is safe, we check the loft, then look for debris or damage left behind.
- We send a photo-illustrated written report of each snag.
Before we arrive
- Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at

Buying a home or a new roof in Chilgrove
Handmade clay tiles and tile-hung upper walls are typical of older Sussex houses. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs. The covering on a house you’re buying, or on a roof just finished, tells us where to look hardest. Historic houses like West Dean House, about 1.6 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Chilgrove goes. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

Your questions about new roof snagging in Chilgrove
Do you cover smaller places like Chilgrove?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
How do I find out if my home in Chilgrove is listed?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Can you settle a dispute with my builder?
No. Our job is to report on the roof as we find it. A disagreement about the work is between you and them, and the report gives you a clear record to refer to.
Do you survey on Saturdays and Sundays?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime, which suits people who work during the week. Just say which days work for you.
How soon after the work should I book a snagging inspection?
Once the roofer says the job is done, ideally before you pay in full. That gives time for any snags to be put right.
How long does new roof snagging take?
Most house visits take about 1–2 hours, and longer for large or complex roofs.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. We use safe viewpoints, the loft space and a drone where it applies.
For landlords and managing agents
We also survey roofs for businesses and commercial landlords, including offices, shops and units. Larger roofs take longer.
Letting agents often book on a landlord’s behalf, with the report sent to whoever needs it. Access is agreed with the tenant beforehand.
Different roofs, different checks
Slate roofs
Natural slate can last 100 years or more, so the laying matters. Cracked, slipped or uneven slates are noted.
Ridges, hips and verges
Loose ridge or hip tiles are a common snag. They’re recorded with photos.
Honest limits
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:
- Legal advice on your contract
- Nails and clips under the slates or tiles
- Details hidden from sight
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will suggest the right survey. The full list of what we check.
