Questions from Clapham

Is my home in Clapham listed or in a conservation area?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

Do you cover smaller places like Clapham?

Yes, Clapham is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.

How long will you be on site?

Most house visits take about 1–2 hours with commercial roofs nearer 3–4 hours.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have been surveying roofs for over 20 years and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.

What if it rains on the day?

It can, depending on the survey. Drones can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, with a dry roof and little wind. If the conditions are not right, we will talk to you about another date.

Can you settle a dispute with my builder?

No. Our job is to report on the roof as we find it. A disagreement about the work is between you and them, and the report gives you a clear record to refer to.

New roof snagging for homes and businesses in Clapham

A snag is a fault or unfinished detail left when work is done. Roof snags often show at ridges, verges, valleys and flashings, where the detailing is hardest. We inspect as far as can be seen safely and record what we find. Typical snags include loose ridge tiles, poorly dressed flashings and debris left in gutters. If you’ve noticed broken coverings left on a new roof and offcuts and broken tiles left behind, we can find out what’s behind it.

Older buildings in small places like Clapham may be listed or in a conservation area. That can affect what materials a new roof may use, so check with the council and Historic England’s list. Whether you’re buying or signing off new roofing, it’s worth knowing where you stand, as well as what condition the roof is in. There are about 500,000 listed buildings and around 10,000 conservation areas in England.

Nothing in the report is left vague: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

Why act early in Clapham

A minor snag left alone can turn into a leak. A slipped verge tile or a loose flashing may let water through during the first winter. Finding them early means they can be dealt with quickly. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

What we do, step by step

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. We inspect everything that’s safely in view, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. Most visits take about 1–2 hours for most homes, depending on how much new work there is to check. Older rural homes like those around Clapham can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. First, we note any deadlines and concerns.
  2. We inspect as far as safe access allows.
  3. We work through ridges, verges, valleys and flashings.
  4. We check the gutters, lower roofs and walls for debris or damage.
  5. You receive a report to share with your roofer.

Slate roofs

Cracked slates are sometimes left in place. We record any we can see.

Ridges, hips and verges

The top and edges of a roof are the most exposed. We check mortar, dry-fix systems and fixings where they can be seen.

Tips that help

A little preparation and a few simple habits help, both for the survey and for the roof itself. Our tips:

  • Tell your roofer the work will be inspected
  • Check the roof before you pay in full
  • Check before your warranty period ends
  • Keep warranty papers safe

Questions about the findings are welcome. The Standard Survey includes a follow-up consultation, and the Premium Survey includes an in-person one.

Note the end date of any defects or warranty period. Book a check well before it so snags can be raised.

New roof snagging in Clapham: local notes

The coast is about 4 miles or less from Clapham, so there is more wind and more salt in the air than further inland. Ecclesden Manor, about 1.5 miles south-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Clapham. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters.
