Roof leak investigation in Battle, East Sussex
Roof leak investigations in Battle, backed by more than 20 years’ experience. You get a clear report with photos.
- Damp ceilings under a flat roof
- Drips in the loft during heavy rain
- A leak that comes and goes with the weather
Tips from our surveys
A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Have an electrician check any wet fittings
- Clear the loft hatch so we can get in
- Stay off ladders and the roof
- Put a bucket under the drip and move valuables
Any roofer you ask to quote can work from the report. The photos show the defects and where they are, so the repair is aimed at the cause.
Look at the roof from ground level after strong winds. Pieces of slate or tile in the garden mean something has moved. Small faults dealt with quickly rarely become leaks.
Roof leak investigation in Battle
Moisture readings and thermal imaging are used where they’re useful. Moisture detection confirms where timbers, plaster or insulation are damp. A thermal camera shows patterns of temperature rather than water, so its findings are checked with moisture readings. Moisture detection is included in the Standard Survey, and thermal imaging in Premium. Thermal imaging works best after a sunny day, on a dry roof with little wind. If you’ve noticed damp patches next to the stack and ceiling stains that grow after rain, we can find out what’s behind it, on slate and tile slopes, lead flashings and chimney stacks alike.
Chimney stacks on older houses around places like Battle can let water in, at the flashings, the pointing or the mortar round the pots. Damp in a chimney breast can have more than one cause, so it is not always obvious where it starts. It’s worth looking at the stack from outside and at the timbers beside it in the loft.
How fast the report arrives depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day.

Honest limits
It is a careful look at the leaking roof, not the whole story. The main limits are:
- A structural engineer’s report
- An intermittent leak that shows no trace on the day
- Water from pipes, tanks or heating systems
If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will recommend the right survey before you book. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- The roof space
- Rooflights and dormers
- Flat roof details
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Lead flashings
- Chimney stacks
- Slate and tile slopes
Can I check my roof myself?
A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
Landlords, agents and block managers in Battle
Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out with the most urgent first where relevant.
If you own several properties, you can book surveys for several addresses. To discuss a number of properties, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
How the survey works
Every visit follows the same pattern: we listen to what’s been worrying you, look at the roof from every safe viewpoint, take photos as we go and make notes for the report. It usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Some parts of a survey depend on the weather, so a visit to Battle is booked with the forecast in mind: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from ground level and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- You tell us where the water appears, when, and what the weather was doing.
- Inside, we look at the stain and the ceiling around it.
- From the loft space, we trace the water’s route where there is safe access.
- We inspect the likely entry points outside, from ground level, windows and the roof where safe.
- You receive a report with the likely source, photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Let us know about parking near the property
- Show us where any leaks or stains appear
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey

What a roof leak investigation looks like in Battle
With Durhamford Manor about 2.4 miles north-east, Battle sits in an area with a long building history. Older roofs in the wider area can hide decades of patch repairs, so the detail matters, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Older houses across Sussex frequently have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging on their upper walls. Some old buildings in Sussex have Horsham stone slab roofs, and oast houses and timber-framed Wealden hall houses are part of East Sussex’s older buildings. The covering and its details give the first clues when tracing where water is coming from.
Anyone responsible for a site like Battle and Langton Church of England Primary School will know that a leak through a large roof is often found some distance from where the water shows inside. If you own one of the older houses in the streets near The Parish Church of St Mary, lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. For landlords with property near Battle station, finding the cause of a leak fast keeps a tenant’s home dry and the work focused.

Battle: your questions answered
How do I find out if my home in Battle is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Is Battle within the area you cover?
Yes. Battle is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route when booking.
How do I arrange a roof leak investigation in Battle?
Simply ring 07833 053749 or email us. We’ll ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
If the survey includes the loft or the inside of the building, someone needs to let us in. We’ll talk about access when you book.
What does the report include?
It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, backed by photos. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely.
Is the repair included in the leak investigation?
This service finds and reports the cause, and the repair is separate. With the report, a roofer knows exactly where to look.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. We look at the parts we’re given access to.
Why act early in Battle
Damp in a ceiling or loft can lead to mould. It is unpleasant, and it’s harder to deal with once established. Stopping the water is the first step. Around Battle, leaves and moss in gutters lead to overflowing water and damp walls, especially where trees overhang. It is easy to sort the cause early and slow to dry a damp wall.
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Basic starts from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, VAT included, and we can help you choose.
