Local roofs in Thong
Thong is within about 4 miles of the coast, where wind off the sea can be strong. The weather on the day decides whether a flight goes ahead, as a small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the Drone Safety Map for restrictions before flying.
Cobham College, about 1.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Thong. Older homes in the area may have roofs that need matching materials when work is done. If you live near a park such as Shorne Woods Country Park, or anywhere with mature trees, autumn leaves can block gutters and valleys, and an overflowing gutter soon means a wet wall. Take an older house close to Church of St Peter and St Paul: corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

How a roof survey works in Thong
Good roofs last decades, but their parts wear at different rates. Natural slate can last 100 years or more, and clay and concrete tiles commonly 50 years or more, but the fixings and underlay beneath them often give out sooner. A survey shows which parts of your roof are wearing. Knowing that helps you plan work before it becomes urgent. We’re often asked to look into torn or sagging underlay and slipped, cracked or missing slates and tiles, on clay and concrete tiles, the roof space and chimney stacks.
Village roofs often face open fields and take the full force of wind and rain, which is hard on ridges, chimneys, flashings and gutters. Damp in old walls is slow to dry, so a small leak can do a lot of harm. A roof report shows what needs attention first. On exposed older roofs, chimneys and lead flashings are often the first to give way.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What else we do in Thong
FAQs for Thong
Do you survey roofs for landlords with property near Sole Street station?
Of course. Let us know whether a tenant or an agent will let us in, and we can send the report to you or your agent.
Does a conservation area affect roof work in Thong?
We cannot confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.
I live in a flat. Can you survey the roof?
Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Tell us about it when booking and we’ll plan the survey around it.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Where it is relevant to the survey and there is safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
How soon is the report ready?
The Premium Survey has a same-day report, Standard 24 to 48 hours and Basic within 48 hours. Each report includes photographs.
How do I book a survey in Thong?
Simply call 07833 053749 or send us an email. We’ll ask a few questions, confirm the price and agree a date, weekday or weekend.
Can you check whether my roof contains asbestos?
No. Asbestos was banned in UK construction in 1999, so older buildings may have it. Our report notes any materials that might, and recommends a specialist asbestos surveyor looks at them.
What happens on the day
We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the roof space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit normally takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Somewhere like Thong needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from ground level, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

Advice
What a roof survey doesn’t cover
To be straight with you, there are limits to any roof survey:
- The condition of the rest of the building (that is a RICS home survey)
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. What our survey covers.
Roof types and parts we check
- Natural slate
- Chimney stacks
- Clay and concrete tiles
- Lead flashings
- The roof space
- Flat roofs
- Ridges, hips and valleys
Roof by roof
Flat roof coverings
A felt roof often lasts around 15 to 20 years, while EPDM rubber frequently lasts 30 to 50 years and GRP up to about 30. We check its condition and the signs of age.
Concrete interlocking tiles
Interlocking tiles on shallow roofs depend on their laps and fixings. We look for lifted, cracked or slipped tiles.
Can I check my roof myself?
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
Rented homes, blocks and businesses
With a portfolio of properties, surveys can be booked for more than one address. To discuss a number of properties, ring 07833 053749 or send us an email.
If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. Surveys run on any day of the week, which helps when tenants work during the week.
What affects the price in Thong
To price your survey, we look at:
- Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
- Commercial roofs and larger buildings
- Height and safe access
- Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
Prices quoted always include VAT, and the report isn’t charged as an extra. Our price is from £150, including VAT. Where your roof sits in the range depends on its size, height and access.
