Roof surveys for homes and businesses in Whitewood
The report is written for you, in plain language. Every issue comes with photos and a written recommendation, and we rank them by urgency where that helps. With the Standard Survey you also get moisture detection and a structural check. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, a drone where applicable and a same-day report. Reports are sent by email. If you’ve noticed torn or sagging underlay and loose chimney pots, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
In a village or hamlet like Whitewood, older cottages and farmhouses often sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are often old. We report on everything that’s safely in view, and thatch is a specialist material. On older roofs, it’s usually the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
We keep jargon out of it: where something needs attention, it says so plainly, and where it can wait, that is said too.

Prices for roof surveys in Whitewood
When we price a survey, we consider:
- Which survey package you book
- House, block, shop or office
- Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
- How big the roof is
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Roof survey starts from £150, including VAT.
What we need to know
You don’t need to know any roofing terms. Just let us know:
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Your postcode, so we can check access and travel
- Photos of the roof, taken safely from ground level or a window
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
Booking is simple: just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and give us some details about the property and we will explain which survey suits. The price is agreed up front.
What we do, step by step
Before we start, let us know why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. The visit typically takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, and more on a big or complicated roof. Somewhere like Whitewood needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- We start with the property details and any concerns.
- We agree a date, including weekends if that suits you.
- We check the roof from each safe vantage point outside.
- Inside, we check the loft space where there’s safe access.
- We email a written report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Keep pets in another room
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Note where any stains or damp appear

Roof by roof
Natural slate
From the loft, we check the underside of a slate roof. Older roofs may have bitumen felt underlay, and very old roofs none, and we note its condition.
Concrete interlocking tiles
Ridge and verge mortar on concrete tile roofs can crack and fall away. Loose ridges and gaps in the mortar are recorded, as wind can lift them.
What a roof survey doesn’t cover
Some things cannot be seen without opening up the roof, and that sets some limits:
- Whether materials contain asbestos (that needs a specialist asbestos surveyor)
- The condition of the rest of the building (that is a RICS home survey)
- Defects hidden under coverings or inside walls without opening up
If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or email us and we will give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.

Your questions about roof surveys in Whitewood
I let a flat near Godstone station. Can you check the roof?
Yes, landlords and agents are among the people we work for. You can call 07833 053749 or use the contact form with the address and what you need.
Will you come out to Whitewood?
Yes, Whitewood is covered. We work right across London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned ahead of time.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once whoever controls the roof agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.
What if it rains on the day?
Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. If the conditions are not right, we’ll talk to you about another date.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.
Can you check whether my roof contains asbestos?
No. Asbestos testing isn’t part of our service. If we see materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on older buildings, we flag them and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
Will you check the loft?
Normally, if there’s one and it can be reached safely. The roof space can show things the outside can’t, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.
Should I look at the roof myself first?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
Tips that help
There’s plenty you can do without going near the roof. Here’s what helps most:
- Find records of any re-roofing or repairs
- Take photos of any leaks as they happen
- Mention any flat roofs as well as the main roof
- Move stored items away from the loft hatch
Standard includes a follow-up consultation to talk the findings through, and the Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation. You can ask us about anything that isn’t clear.
Look at your roof from ground level after strong winds. Fragments of slate or tile on the ground mean something has shifted. Prompt repairs stop small problems growing.
Roof surveys in Whitewood: local notes
Older houses across Surrey often have handmade clay tiles, and many have tile-hanging. Horsham stone slab roofs survive on some old buildings in Surrey. Whatever the covering, it is often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. Whitewood is about 2 miles from the edge of the flight restriction zone around Redhill Aerodrome. Where the drone is part of the survey, we check the exact boundary for the address before flying.
If you let a flat or house near Godstone station, a dated record of the roof is useful when planning maintenance across a let. Take an older house close to Church of St Mary the Virgin: its chimney, valleys and lead work are likely to be the parts that need attention first.
