Storm damage roof report in Chicheley

Many policies treat gusts of about 55 mph as storm conditions, but it varies by policy. Your policy document sets out its own definition. Whether the weather met it is for your insurer. We record the damage and what seems to have caused it. Each area of damage is photographed, and the report is yours to pass on. Insurers decide claims on their own policy wording. If you’ve noticed slipped or missing slates or tiles and lead lifted at abutments, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Many homes in small places like Chicheley face open ground, so storms hit ridges, verges and chimneys hard. Once water gets into older walls, it takes a long time to dry, which makes finding the cause quickly worthwhile. A written record also helps if you need to explain it to anyone else.

It isn’t only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

What happens on the day

The visit typically starts outside and finishes in the loft: outside views come first, then the roof space if there’s safe access. In total, it takes between one and two hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Rural addresses near Chicheley can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. You tell us when the storm was and what damage you’ve seen.
  2. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows and from the loft space where it is safe.
  3. We photograph and record every area of damage we can see.
  4. We note the likely cause, including any signs of wear that were there before the storm.
  5. We send you a written report with photos, ready to give to your insurer.

Advice

DIY checks: what’s safe

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Don’t go up yourself.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Chicheley

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.

An agent can book and manage the survey for a landlord. We agree a time with the tenant beforehand.

What this survey cannot tell you

It’s useful to know what a survey won’t do before booking:

  • The work of a loss adjuster appointed by your insurer
  • Whether your insurer will pay the claim
  • What’s beneath slates, tiles or membranes

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer before booking. What our survey covers.

Chicheley roofs and the weather

Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Where water gets in depends a good deal on what the roof is made of and how it’s detailed. Historic houses like Linford Manor, about 3.9 miles south-west, show how far back building in the area around Chicheley goes. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

Anyone responsible for a site like Sherington Church of England School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot. The streets around a church such as Church of St Lawrence are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, water on an older roof tends to find its way in at the lead, the valleys or the chimney.

We do. Every survey there gets the same written report with photos, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.

Will you come out to Chicheley?

Yes. Chicheley is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. Our area covers London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there as you book.

How are storm damage reports priced?

A storm damage report starts from £150. Larger roofs are quoted for their size. Repair costs aren’t part of the report.

How do I arrange a storm damage roof report in Chicheley?

The quickest way is to phone 07833 053749 or email us. Give us the address and some details about the roof. We survey on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Who handles emergency protection after a storm?

Call a roofer for emergency temporary protection. If it’s safe, photograph the damage before it is covered. Keep receipts in case your insurer asks for them.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.

Does your report mean my claim will be accepted?

The decision is your insurer’s, not ours. We record the damage, with photographs and the likely cause, for you to give to your insurer.

What we look for on each type of roof

Lead flashings

Flashings can lift or pull away from walls and chimneys in strong winds. Loose or damaged flashings are photographed and noted.

Slate roofs

Slates often outlast the nails that hold them. The report records whether slipped slates look like storm damage or older wear.
