How a storm damage roof report works in Churchill
The Financial Ombudsman asks three questions when it looks at storm complaints: were there storm conditions on or around the date, is the damage consistent with a storm, and was the storm the main cause. Our report focuses on the second and third points. Weather records for the date are for you or your insurer to check. We survey ridges and hips, slate and tile slopes and gutters and fascias, and people most frequently book us about flat roof edges peeled back and holes or cracks caused by debris.
For a small place like Churchill, the inspection is the same as anywhere: we simply plan the journey and access ahead. Tell us where the water shows, when it appears and anything you’ve noticed outside, plus any earlier repairs. If you have photos of the water coming in, they help as well.
The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

What we can’t see
Every survey has limits, and we’d rather be clear about that before booking. Bear these in mind:
- A price for the repairs
- Your insurer’s view of the claim
- Negotiating a claim settlement

What else we do in Churchill
Common roof problems in Churchill
A storm often finds a roof’s existing weak spots. Corroded nails on slate roofs, worn mortar on ridges and old flashings can all give way. Our report notes both the storm damage and any older wear.
Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:
- Stains appearing after strong winds
- Ridge tiles that have come loose
- Torn or lifted flat roof coverings
- Damage from fallen branches or debris
Anyone responsible for a site like Kingham Primary School will know that water through a big roof can travel a long way before it drips, so the search covers more than the obvious spot.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Whether the price includes VAT
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- Their drone registration, if they fly one
Prices for storm damage roof reports in Churchill
Not every roof costs the same to survey, for these reasons:
- Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- Basic, Standard or Premium
Prices start from £150, including VAT. Packages run from Basic at £150 through Standard at £250 to Premium at £400, with VAT included, and we will tell you which fits.
Booking your survey
The more you let us know, the easier it is to price the survey. When you contact us, let us know:
- Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
- The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
- The style of property, from a terrace to a block
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: phone 07833 053749 or send us an email. The price is agreed before a date is set.
What you can safely check yourself
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
How the survey changes by roof type
Lead flashings
When flashings lift, water can get behind them. The report records the flashing and any damp inside.
Flat roof coverings
Branches and debris can damage flat roofs or block outlets. We record what we find.
The survey, step by step
The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Everything we note and photograph goes into the written report. It usually takes between one and two hours for a house, while a commercial roof takes nearer three to four hours. In a small place like Churchill, access is typically the main thing to plan. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.
- We start with what you’ve seen and any temporary repairs.
- Inside, we look for signs of water in the loft and rooms below.
- The roof is inspected from ground level, windows and the roof where it is safe.
- Storm damage and older wear are recorded separately where we can.
- You receive the written report with photos.
Getting ready for the survey
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
- Keep pets in another room
- Find any records of previous roof work
How to book
Buyers should book once an offer has been accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply call 07833 053749 or drop us an email whenever suits you.

Wind, rain and roofs in Churchill
Chastleton House, about 3.8 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Churchill. If your house is among the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material. West Oxfordshire’s older buildings often carry Cotswold stone slates, and a few villages in the county keep their thatch. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Each of these roof types has its own typical places for water to get in.
Take an older house close to Church of All Saints: lead flashings, valleys and old chimneys are typical places for water to get in. For landlords with property near Kingham station, a tenant living with a leak needs the cause found, not just the stain painted over.

Common questions in Churchill
Do you carry out roof surveys in Churchill?
Yes. We cover the whole of London and South East England, and Churchill is part of that. Just ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form and let us know about the property.
How do I find out if my home in Churchill is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.
Will you check the loft?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Mention it when you contact us and we will explain what’s needed.
What does a storm damage report cost?
Our price is from £150, including VAT. Bigger roofs are quoted on size and access. It doesn’t include repair costs, so you will need a roofer’s quote for those.
How many surveys have you done?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.
Will my insurer pay for an old roof?
Insurers normally exclude wear and tear. Our report gives an honest view of what’s recent damage and what’s older wear. The claim decision is your insurer’s.
