Practical tips

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Check from the ground or a window, never by climbing
  • Clear leaves from outlets and gutters each autumn
  • Photograph damp patches with the date
  • Remember the conditions on the day affect the results

Premium Surveys include an in-person consultation, giving you the chance to talk through the images and findings. A follow-up 12 months later is included as well.

Check that loft insulation is laid evenly and hasn’t been pushed aside. Insulation is often moved when people work in the loft space.

Thermal roof surveys for homes and businesses in Churchill

Thermal imaging can also show where a roof is losing heat. Gaps in loft insulation and poorly insulated areas can stand out on the images. It works best when the building is heated and it’s colder outside. Our report points out what the images suggest and where to look more closely. We do not give energy ratings or heat loss calculations. We survey commercial roofs, pitched roof slopes and insulated roof spaces, and common reasons people get in touch are areas losing heat at the eaves and junctions and wet insulation beneath the membrane.

In a small place like Churchill, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

The report records the roof as we found it on the day. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later, like when you want to compare after future work.

Churchill: your questions answered

Is Churchill within the area you cover?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We cover the whole of London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.

Is my home in Churchill listed or in a conservation area?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Can you use a thermal camera on a sloping roof?

It can show heat loss and some damp, but it has more limits there. We explain what the images can and cannot tell you, and back them up with a visual inspection and moisture readings.

How soon will I get the report?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.

Is this a RICS survey?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. If you need a full building survey, you will need a RICS survey as well.

What does the report include?

It sets out what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, with photographs throughout. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely.

Are you structural engineers?

No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but we don’t provide calculations or an engineer’s opinion. The report will say if you need an engineer.

What a thermal roof survey does not cover

It’s useful to know what a survey won’t do before you book:

  • Insulation values or heat loss calculations
  • Proving moisture from the images alone
  • Clear results when the conditions on the day are poor

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you. The full list of what we check.

What happens on the day

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take between one and two hours at a house, including the thermal images, and around 3–4 hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like Churchill, the journey is planned ahead of time: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.

  1. First we go over the roof, the problem you’ve noticed and the conditions forecast for the visit.
  2. We carry out a visual inspection of the roof from wherever it can be seen safely.
  3. We take thermal images of the roof to pick up temperature patterns.
  4. We check the patterns that stand out with moisture readings where there’s safe access.
  5. The report sets out the images, what they suggest and what we recommend.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • Make a note of anything you’d like us to look at
  • Unlock side gates and any roof access doors

Advice

Signs you need a thermal roof survey in Churchill

Building owners and managing agents use thermal surveys to plan work on larger flat roofs. It can suggest which areas may be wet and which seem dry, so we know where to take moisture readings.

A survey can pick up problems such as:

  • Cold spots on ceilings under the roof
  • Possible trapped moisture under a flat roof covering
  • Water that travels before it shows
  • Moisture around outlets and upstands

The streets around a church such as Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

What to check before booking

  • Whether the loft space is looked at, where there is one
  • Whether VAT is added on top
  • What exactly goes into their report
  • Their track record with similar roofs

Why it is worth a survey now in Churchill

Heat lost through a roof costs money every winter. Thermal images can show where insulation is missing or has slipped, so you know where to put things right. Outbuildings and barns around Churchill are easy to forget, but a failed roof there can spoil what’s stored inside. A quick look before winter can save a lot.
