Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Churchill
Chastleton House, about 3.8 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Churchill. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Knowing the covering helps explain which parts of a roof are likely to need work first.
For site and facilities teams at buildings like Kingham Primary School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time. Landlords with a home close to Kingham station may find that a roof report helps you deal with small faults before they turn into a call from a tenant. If your home is one of the older ones in the streets near Church of All Saints, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

Gutter surveys for homes and businesses in Churchill
Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Buildings near trees collect more, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full, which outlets and hoppers are choked and whether any overflows are doing their job. Photos show each problem clearly. Blocked gutters are easy to put off, but they rarely get better. If you’ve noticed dripping or leaking gutter joints and fascia boards damaged by overflowing water, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on eaves gutters, parapet and box gutters and fascias and soffits alike.
Some older homes in villages like Churchill are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. A roof report helps you plan work with that in mind. Where a building is listed, matching the existing roof materials is often expected.
The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

Should I look at the roof myself first?
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.
Roof by roof
Lead-lined valley and parapet gutters
Lead linings are common in valleys and parapet gutters on older houses. Splits and failed joints in the lead can let water straight in.
Cast iron gutters
Cast iron gutters and downpipes are found on many older buildings. Kept painted, they can last a long time, but rust where the paint fails.
Prices for gutter surveys in Churchill
Prices vary from roof to roof, for these reasons:
- The use of thermal imaging or a drone
- The shape of the roof and its details
- Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
- Roof area
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how safely it can be seen. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

Tips from our surveys
Here are a few things we’d tell any owner, before and after a survey:
- Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
- Watch the gutters during heavy rain
- Look for green streaks or damp patches on walls
- Have gutters cleared at least once a year
You receive a report with photographs and recommendations, prioritised by urgency where relevant. You can pass it to whoever you choose to do the work so they know what needs doing.
Have your gutters cleared at least once a year or more often near trees. Late autumn, after the leaves have fallen, is a sensible time. Clean gutters can do their job.
When you need someone else
It’s useful to know what a survey will not do before booking:
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards
- Pipes below ground level
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

Common questions in Churchill
Can a landlord with a rental near Kingham station book a roof survey?
Yes, letting agents and landlords book with us as well as owners. Just phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and tell us about the building.
Is my home in Churchill listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Can you inspect my roof with a drone?
Yes, where it is applicable. We hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID and fly a drone under 250g, and the airspace and weather are checked before every flight.
What’s the best way to book?
To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We will confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Can you tell me if my old gutters contain asbestos?
No. We don’t carry out asbestos testing. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.
Is a CCTV drain survey included?
No, CCTV drain work isn’t part of this survey. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and flags signs of a drain problem.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, once access has been agreed. Roofs over flats are often shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We inspect only the parts we’re allowed to reach.
The survey, step by step
After the inspection, everything we found is written up as a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. On timing, it typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. Somewhere like Churchill needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- You let us know where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can safely be seen.
- The loft space is checked for staining, where it can be reached safely.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- Mention any parking restrictions on your street
- Note where any stains or damp appear
