About gutter surveys in Oxfordshire

Most gutters hang from the fascia boards at the eaves, so we look at the fascias and soffits too. Water that overflows for long enough can rot timber fascias and stain the soffits below. On buildings from before 2000, some soffits and rainwater goods may be asbestos cement. We do not carry out asbestos testing, so we flag anything that might contain it for a specialist asbestos surveyor to check. Common reasons to book are water spilling over the gutter edge and leaves and moss blocking gutters, on parapet and box gutters, outlets and hoppers and valley gutters.

The visit has one job: to look at the gutter as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit typically takes about one to two hours on an ordinary house, and longer for a large or complex roof.

  1. We agree which parts of the building you are most worried about.
  2. Each gutter run is checked for blockages, sags and leaking joints.
  3. We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
  4. Fascias, soffits and the walls below are looked at for signs of overflow.
  5. Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

Gutter surveys across Oxfordshire: local notes

From Oxford, Banbury and Didcot to smaller places, people across Oxfordshire use a roof survey to plan ahead. Small faults, caught early, are far easier to deal with.

Our surveys reach from London out to Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Essex, the Thames Valley, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, Oxfordshire included. We survey on any day of the week.

Oxford: For businesses in and around places such as Clarendon Shopping Centre, knowing the roof’s condition lets you budget for work rather than pay for emergencies. For an older house near a landmark like St Clement's Church, the nails, lead and mortar on the roof may be wearing out even where the slates or tiles look fine.

Tips that help

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:

  • Check from ground level or a window, not a ladder
  • Do not leave hidden gutters out of a clear-out
  • Book gutter clearing once a year, more often near trees
  • Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain

Report times depend on the package you choose: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. We email it to you once it is done.

Get small faults like a dripping joint or loose downpipe sorted quickly. Left alone, they typically grow, and the water they spill can damage walls and timber.

What a survey costs

When we price a survey, we consider:

  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
  • Roof area
  • Height and safe access
  • House, block, shop or office

For a price for your roof in Oxfordshire, call 07833 053749 or email us and tell us about the roof. We’ll confirm the figure before booking.

What to let us know when you contact us

There’s no need for technical words. It’s enough to tell us:

  • When you need the report by
  • Where water is showing inside, if it is
  • What’s prompted the survey
  • The property’s address and postcode

If you are buying, it helps to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there is time to use the report before exchange. For any other survey, just call 07833 053749 or email us when you’re ready.

Why get it checked now?

Our report is a dated record of what we found, useful when you’re planning maintenance or getting work priced. Without one, it’s guesswork from the ground.

Before booking any surveyor

  • Their track record with similar roofs
  • Is there a chance to talk the report through?
  • Will the report include photos?
  • What the survey will not cover

Roof by roof

Box and secret gutters

Hidden gutters are a common source of leaks inside. Outlets, linings and overflows are checked as far as access allows.

Fascias and soffits

Some older soffits may contain asbestos. Any we think could be are flagged so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check them before they’re disturbed.

Can I check my roof myself?

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From ground level, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.

Questions from Oxfordshire

Will you check if gutters are causing damp inside?

Leaking gutters and downpipes are a common cause of damp walls, and the survey looks for that. If the evidence points elsewhere, we will say so as far as we can tell from what’s visible.

Will you check the drains below ground?

No, CCTV drain work is not part of this survey. The survey covers gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows and flags signs of a drain problem.

How many surveys have you done?

We’ve completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years.

How long does a gutter survey take?

Most visits to a house take about 1–2 hours, with commercial buildings nearer 3–4 hours.

Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?

Whenever suits you. If water is already spilling over, book sooner rather than later as overflowing water can damage walls.

What do I do with the report?

We email you the written report with photographs and recommendations. It is yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes. A shared roof needs access agreed first. Let us know about it when booking and we will plan the survey around it.
