Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Tiddington
Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first. Historic houses such as Adwell House, about 4.5 miles south-east, show how far back building in the area around Tiddington goes. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years.

Gutter survey in Tiddington: what you get
We survey gutters and rainwater systems in Tiddington and right across London and South East England. We inspect everything we can see safely, from ground level, from windows and from the roof space. A visit normally takes about 1–2 hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. The written report follows, with photographs and recommendations. If you’ve noticed leaks at the gutter joints and fascia boards damaged by overflowing water, we can find out what’s behind it, on fascias and soffits, downpipes and eaves gutters alike.
Somewhere as small as Tiddington, homes are often older cottages and farmhouses, with outbuildings and some newer houses. Roofs there can be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, and chimney stacks are frequently old. Each needs checking in its own way, and thatch is a specialist material we report on as far as it can be seen. Chimneys and lead flashings on old roofs often need the most attention.
After the visit, you get a written report with photographs, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend.

When to book a survey in Tiddington
Overflowing gutters in a downpour are a common reason to book. Others spot damp patches, ceiling stains or green marks on the walls. The survey helps pin down the source before it causes more harm.
A survey makes sense if you’ve noticed:
- Water backing up from a hidden gutter
- Leaks at the gutter joints
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Leaking or loose downpipes
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Helen, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.
Before booking any roof surveyor
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- What experience they bring
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?

Your questions about gutter surveys in Tiddington
Is Tiddington within the area you cover?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.
Is Tiddington in the area you cover?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Tiddington as anywhere else.
How long have you been surveying roofs?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years.
Is there a good time of year to book a gutter survey?
You can book at any time of year. Before the wetter months gives you time to plan any work, and a wet spell can show where gutters overflow.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Visible signs such as deflection or sagging are recorded, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so we need permission from whoever owns or manages the building. We can only inspect what we are given access to.
Can a gutter survey explain damp on my walls?
The survey looks at whether rainwater is spilling onto the wall from overflows, leaking joints or loose downpipes. We can’t see inside walls, so we report on what’s visible.
Why it is worth a survey now in Tiddington
When a valley or parapet gutter blocks, the water has nowhere safe to go. It can back up into the roof space and the rooms below typically during the worst downpours. Having them checked before autumn and winter makes sense. Older cottages and farmhouses around Tiddington can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it is left.

The survey, step by step
You do not need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, like stains, drips or loose pieces, and we will take it from there. A typical survey takes between one and two hours for a house, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Older rural homes like those around Tiddington can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can safely be seen.
- First, we agree the areas to focus on.
- We look along each run for debris, sagging and drips.
- We check the outlets, hoppers, downpipes and any overflows.
- We check fascias, soffits and walls for water damage.
- Findings are photographed and set out in a written report.

Advice
What this survey can’t tell you
In fairness, a roof survey has limits:
- Damage hidden inside walls or behind boards

Roof by roof
Plastic (uPVC) gutters
On plastic systems, slipped joints are one of the most common faults. We record each one we can see.
Box and secret gutters
Secret gutters are hidden under the edge of the roof covering, so they’re easy to forget. We check what’s visible and note what isn’t.
