Gutter survey in Albury, Oxfordshire
Wondering about the gutter at a property in Albury? You can book a gutter survey in Albury and across Oxfordshire, with plain-English findings.
- Overflowing eaves gutters
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Gutters packed with leaves or moss
How a gutter survey works in Albury
Most blocked gutters are full of leaves, moss or silt. Homes close to trees fill their gutters faster, and moss washing off a tiled or slate roof adds to it. Our survey shows which gutters are blocked or standing full and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. The photos show you exactly what we found. Blocked gutters are easy to put off but it rarely improves. We are often asked to look into downpipes that are split or coming away and water spilling over the gutter edge, across valley gutters, downpipes and fascias and soffits.
Some older homes in villages like Albury are listed or in a conservation area. If yours is, re-roofing in different materials may need consent, so the council is the place to check. Knowing the roof’s condition helps you plan ahead with that in mind. Older materials like clay tiles, slate and stone are frequently matched when work is done.
You can share the report with anyone who needs it: your solicitor, the seller, your insurer, a roofer or the building’s managing agent, whichever applies.

When you need someone else
We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so there are some things a survey cannot cover:
- What’s behind fascias and inside walls
- Parts of gutters that cannot be seen safely
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we will tell you. What a survey covers and doesn’t.
What we look at
- Downpipes
- Outlets and hoppers
- Parapet and box gutters
- Valley gutters
- Fascias and soffits
- Eaves gutters
The survey, step by step
Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes an hour or two at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. You are welcome to ask questions while we’re there. In a hamlet or village like Albury, a postcode does not always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, such as damp or overflowing gutters.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
- Where it is safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Dig out any old roof reports or invoices
- Tell us about parking before the day

Tips that help
Over many surveys, some simple habits stand out:
- Leave gutter checks at height to someone equipped for it
- Look for new stains on ceilings below valleys after rain
- Get trees that overhang the gutters trimmed
- Look out for overflows when it pours
After any work is done, watch the gutters in the next heavy rain. Water should run to the outlets and away without spilling over. If it doesn’t, tell whoever did the work.
Get trees and climbers near the eaves trimmed back by someone who can do it safely. Less debris means fewer blocked outlets.
Roofs, chimneys and gutters in Albury
About 4.3 miles south-east lies Adwell House, a reminder of how long the area around Albury has been built on. If your home is one of the older ones, expect a mix of original materials and later repairs on the roof, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. On roofs like these, good slates or tiles can outlast the nails, battens, lead and mortar around them.
If you live in an older home near Church of St Helen, old fixings, lead flashings and tall chimneys are typical of older roofs.

What else we do in Albury
Albury: your questions answered
Will you come out to Albury?
Yes, Albury is on our map. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one, with the route planned beforehand.
Is Albury in the area you cover?
We do. The survey and report are the same in Albury as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
What’s in the report?
A written report with photos, explaining the condition of the gutter, any defects and our recommendations, by urgency where it matters. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Not always. An outside-only look can be arranged beforehand, but anything inside needs someone there to give access.
How much time does the visit need?
A visit normally takes between one and two hours for most homes, and longer where there are parapet, valley or box gutters to follow. You will know roughly how long when we arrange the visit.
Do you check valley and parapet gutters?
Yes. Hidden gutters are a common cause of leaks inside, so they’re an important part of the survey. Some may only be partly visible, and the report says so.
Are you structural engineers?
No. Our survey is not a structural engineer’s report. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.

Checking the roof from ground level
After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Don’t go up yourself.
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
