Gutter survey in Headington Quarry, Oxfordshire
Know where you stand with the gutter before you spend money on it. We carry out gutter surveys in Headington Quarry, with photographs and a clear written report.
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
- Gutters that have fallen out of line
- Soffits marked by water
The survey, step by step
The aim of the visit is simple: to look at the gutter as closely as is safe and record what we find. Notes and photos go into the written report. It usually takes between one and two hours at a house, depending on how many gutter runs and downpipes there are. In a smaller place like Headington Quarry, as anywhere, the forecast plays a part: drone flights and thermal imaging need the right conditions, while a look from the ground and the loft can go ahead in most weather.
- We start with what you’ve noticed, like damp or overflowing gutters.
- We walk round the building and check the gutters, downpipes and fascias from the ground.
- We check hidden gutters as far as safe access allows.
- Where it is safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- A written report with photographs and recommendations follows.

Gutter survey in Headington Quarry: what you get
Leaves, moss and silt are the usual reasons gutters block. Buildings near trees collect more and moss from the roof slopes makes it worse. We note where gutters are clogged or holding water and where outlets or hoppers are choked and whether overflows are working. The photos show you exactly what we found. Blocked gutters are easy to put off, but they rarely get better. If you’ve noticed sagging gutters and loose brackets and overflowing valley or parapet gutters, we can find out what’s behind it, on outlets and hoppers, eaves gutters and parapet and box gutters alike.
Houses in smaller places like Headington Quarry can face open ground, where wind and driving rain hit the roof harder. That weather tells first on ridges, verges, chimneys and flashings. A proper look shows whether anything has started to loosen. A loose ridge tile or slate gives the wind something to catch, and others soon follow.
The report records the gutter as we found it on the day. It is useful right away, and a good reference for later.

Tips from our surveys
You do not need to be a roofer to help. Here’s what helps most:
- Watch for green marks down the brickwork
- Include valley, parapet and box gutters when clearing
- Check that downpipes are firmly fixed to the wall
- Do not climb a ladder to look in the gutters
Once work is carried out, keep an eye on the gutters in the next downpour. Water should run to the outlets and away without spilling over. If it does not, tell whoever did the work.
Look at the gutters from indoors or the ground when it pours. Overflows and dripping joints are a sign to act before the walls suffer.
When to book a survey in Headington Quarry
Leaves are behind most blocked gutters. Nearby trees drop leaves, twigs and seeds into gutters every autumn and the debris builds up at the outlets. A choked outlet soon means a full, overflowing gutter.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Downpipes that are split or coming away
- Joints that drip after rain
- Brackets that have dropped or snapped
- Hoppers and outlets full of debris
For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Headington Quarry Foundation Stage School, a written record of a large roof helps plan work for the holidays rather than in term time.
What to check before booking
- What’s outside the scope of the survey
- How much experience they have with roofs like yours
- Whether the price includes VAT
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
How we price gutter surveys
What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. That comes down to:
- How many separate roofs there are, such as extensions, dormers and garages
- Features like valleys, chimneys, dormers and parapets
- Roof area
- House, block, shop or office
Simple, low roofs take less time to survey than tall or complicated ones, and the package you pick makes a difference too. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.
Booking your survey
A little information up front helps. Please include:
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
- Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Whether there is a loft hatch, a shared roof or tricky access
A quick phone call is normally the easiest start: call 07833 053749 or use the contact form. You will have a price before anything is arranged.
Why it’s worth a survey now in Headington Quarry
A written report gives you a dated record of the gutters’ condition, useful when you’re planning maintenance or getting work priced. Without it, you’re relying on what can be seen from the pavement. Tradespeople may need to travel further to a smaller place like Headington Quarry, so it helps to plan roof work rather than call someone out in a hurry. A survey gives you that notice.
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: how big it is, how high it is, the number of separate roofs and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £150, including VAT.

What a gutter survey looks like in Headington Quarry
The wider area around Headington Quarry has a long history of building, with Holywell Manor about 2 miles west. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area. Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Whatever the covering, it’s often the fixings, flashings, valleys and gutters that give out first.
If you run a business near Templars Square, a dated report on the roof is useful for planning and for any lease discussions. For an older house near a landmark such as Holy Trinity Church, corroded nails, tired lead and weathered chimney pointing are the things to watch on older roofs.

Questions from Headington Quarry
Will you come out to Headington Quarry?
Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. Our area covers London and the South East. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.
Can a landlord with a rental near Oxford station book a roof survey?
Yes. We survey roofs for landlords, letting agents and managing agents as well as owners. Just ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the details.
What’s in the survey report?
Written findings with photographs, covering the condition of the gutter, the defects we found and what we recommend, by urgency where it matters. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable and structural analysis.
Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?
No. We do not carry out asbestos testing. Where gutters, downpipes or soffits could be asbestos cement, we flag them so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check before any work.
Do I have to be there for the survey?
Someone needs to let us in if we are looking inside or in the loft. We will talk about access when booking.
How soon will I get the report?
It depends on the package: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, once access has been agreed. The roof of a block or converted house is often shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.

Before you book, it’s worth knowing what a survey won’t do:
- Gutters out of sight from each safe vantage point
- The inside of a downpipe along its whole length
- Underground drains, which need a CCTV drain survey
