Drone roof survey in Oxfordshire: how it works

Drone roof surveys are available in Oxfordshire and throughout London and the South East, subject to airspace checks and the weather. We fly on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. We check the airspace for your address before booking a flight. You get a written report with close-up photos and recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. We are often asked to look into lead work pulling away at abutments and damage after a storm that can’t be seen from below, across tall and steep roofs, large and complex roofs and chimney stacks.

Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a photo-illustrated written report. On timing, it typically takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Drone roof surveys across Oxfordshire: local notes

Across Oxfordshire, from Oxford, Banbury and Didcot outwards, plenty of roofs can’t be seen properly from the street. A drone or thermal camera adds a view you can’t get from ground level.

Our area covers London and the South East, including Oxfordshire. London and the South East have homes from every era, from period terraces to post-war new towns and new estates.

Oxford: Hotels and guest houses near Oxford cannot easily close rooms for a leak, so it pays to find faults before guests do. Holywell Manor, about 0.8 miles north-west, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around Oxford. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Chimney tops are hard to see from the ground. A drone gets close to the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings, so cracks and gaps are clear.

Steep slate and tile slopes

Widespread slipping on slate usually means nail fatigue. We can see the extent of it from above.

Honest limits

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • Flights in strong wind or heavy rain
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings

Tips that help

Most of what helps is simple and safe from ground level. A few suggestions:

  • Let us know the exact address when booking
  • Expect us to rearrange if it’s too windy or wet
  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit

You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to go through what the drone showed. You can ask about anything that isn’t clear.

Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Photograph anything new.

Prices for drone roof surveys in Oxfordshire

To price your survey, we check:

  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • Basic, Standard or Premium
  • The roof’s overall size

We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all inc. VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Getting in touch

If you can, have these to hand when you contact us:

  • Anything about access we should know
  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • The address and postcode of the property
  • The kind of building and roof involved

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The exact figure depends on the roof and the package, and you can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email to find out.

What you can safely check yourself

Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

A DIY look is useful, but it isn’t a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

Oxfordshire: your questions answered

Do you climb onto every roof?

Not unless it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We do not sample or test for asbestos. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

Is Oxfordshire in your area?

Yes. Our area covers London and South East England, Oxfordshire included.

What do I do with the report?

You’ll receive the report by email, and you decide the next step: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.

Is a drone roof survey a thermal survey?

The drone gives you detailed photos of the outside of the roof. Thermal imaging comes with the Premium Survey, as a separate check.

What’s in the survey report?

It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos. Points are put with the most urgent first where relevant.

Can you survey a shared roof?

Yes, if the building owner or managing agent agrees access. We check the parts we are given access to, and the report makes that clear.
