Drone roof surveys in Farnborough

Drone roof survey in Farnborough: what you get

Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. The photos go into a written report. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. If we cannot fly, we tell you why. We survey fragile roofs, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors, and the problems we are asked to look at most are moss and weeds taking hold up top and ridge and hip pieces working loose.

Some older homes in villages like Farnborough are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

After the visit, you get a written report with photos, emailed to you. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

What you can safely check yourself

After strong wind, take a look from the pavement or garden: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.

It is useful to keep a record: dates of leaks, photos from the ground and any work done on the roof. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

What a drone roof survey doesn’t cover

We only report everything that’s safely in view on the day, so some things are outside what a survey can do:

  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • Structural calculations (that is a structural engineer’s job)

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll recommend the right survey before you book. What our survey covers.

Roofs we survey in Farnborough

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs

Why act early in Farnborough

A drone survey disturbs nothing on the roof. Fragile slates and tiles stay as they are, so you see the roof exactly as it is. Matching old materials, such as handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That is one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

We offer three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Farnborough: your questions answered

Is Farnborough within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. Our area covers London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is drone flying allowed in Farnborough?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

What does a roof survey cost?

Our price is from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT.

How do I book a survey in Farnborough?

The quickest way is to phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form. Give us the address and a few details about the roof, and we’ll take it from there. Surveys run on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, like old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it.

How long does the survey take?

That depends on the size and shape of the roof; most visits take roughly 1–2 hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. The report is sent afterwards by email.

Drones, thermal imaging and Farnborough roofs

England has around 10,000 conservation areas and about 500,000 listed buildings. If your home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission, so check with the council. Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Steep or complicated roofs are often hard to see from ground level, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help.

The streets around a church such as Church of All Saints are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. For any home in Farnborough, it is the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right.

Different roofs, different checks

Chimney stacks

Our drone check of a chimney is visual, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If the flue needs a specialist, we will tell you.

Steep slate and tile slopes

On slate roofs, slipped slates frequently point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:

  • The shape of the roof and its details
  • Any need for thermal images or a drone flight
  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages

Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so they’re priced to match. You’ll know the figure before booking.

What we need to know

There is no need for technical words. Just tell us:

  • What’s prompted the survey
  • Anything about access we should know
  • Pictures from the garden or a window, if you have them
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block

Getting a price is simple: just call 07833 053749 or send us an email, let us know about the property and we will explain which survey suits. We confirm the price before anything is booked.

What happens on the day

On the day, we begin with a quick chat about the roof and anything that’s worrying you. After that, we check everything we can see safely. Most surveys take about one to two hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Cottages and farmhouses around Farnborough frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. First comes the address, plus a note of what worries you about the roof.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is looked at, with permission requested if required.
  3. We assess the conditions and the take-off spot first.
  4. We fly the sub-250g drone close to the roof and photograph each area.
  5. The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.

Before the survey

  • Keep pets out of the way during the survey
  • If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
