How a drone roof survey works in West Ilsley
Drone surveys suit tall houses, blocks of flats, steep roofs and large commercial roofs. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. We will tell you if another approach would work better. If you are worried about cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots and blocked valleys and parapet gutters, we can find out what’s behind it, on chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors alike.
Somewhere as small as West Ilsley, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. A drone and a thermal camera each give a view you can’t get from ground level. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.
We write the report in plain English, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Each point is backed by a photo where possible.

DIY checks: what’s safe
A lot can be seen from ground level. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Do not go up yourself.
What we look for on each type of roof
Valleys and parapet gutters
When a parapet outlet blocks, water can come inside. Outlets and any debris around them are photographed.
Large commercial roofs
Fragile roof sheets and roof lights can be dangerous to walk on. With a drone, nobody has to go near them.

Questions from West Ilsley
Are there drone restrictions around West Ilsley?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
Is West Ilsley within the area you cover?
Yes, West Ilsley is on our map. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes. Shared roofs just need a little more planning. Tell us about it as you book and we’ll plan the survey around it.
Will you go up on the roof?
Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs can’t always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.
Will you check the loft?
If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We’re roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it does not include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we’ll recommend one.
What do I do with the report?
The report comes by email, and you decide the next step: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
Drone roof surveys around West Ilsley
Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles, and flat-roofed additions turn up almost everywhere. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
The streets around a church such as Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. For any home in West Ilsley, it’s the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right.

What happens if roof problems are left?
Photographing a roof from the air doesn’t touch it. Nothing is cracked or dislodged by footsteps, so you see the roof exactly as it is. Older and listed buildings around West Ilsley may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, with VAT included. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

What a drone roof survey does not cover
Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:
- A structural engineer’s report
- Flights in strong wind or a downpour
- Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will tell you. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
- Tall and steep roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Fragile roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
How the survey works
We photograph the roof as we go, so you can see in the report what we found and where. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. Most surveys take about one to two hours at most homes, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. For a village or hamlet like West Ilsley, the journey is planned beforehand: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there is safe access and from the roof where it is safe.
- First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
- We also look inside the loft space where it’s safe.
- You get photos, findings and clear recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- For a flat or shared roof, check access with whoever owns or manages the building
- Note where any stains or damp appear
- If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
Getting a price
Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so call 07833 053749 or email us with the details.
