Airspace, weather and East Hendred roofs

We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight. Older buildings in west Oxfordshire often have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these.

For site and facilities teams at buildings such as The Hendreds Church of England School, big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once. The streets around a church such as Church of St Augustine of Canterbury are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in East Hendred

They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from the ground. They also suit fragile roofs that nobody should walk on. The roof is photographed without being disturbed. Ahead of the visit, we check the address for any airspace restrictions that apply. If a drone is not the right tool, we’ll say so. We survey large and complex roofs, fragile roofs and chimney stacks, and people most often book us about worn lead at chimneys and walls and standing water on a flat roof.

In a small place like East Hendred, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone can’t fly safely in high wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, each with a short note and a photo. It records what’s sound as well as what isn’t.

How the survey works

The aim of the visit is simple: to see as much of the roof as can be seen safely and record it clearly. Notes and photos go into the written report. It typically takes about one to two hours at a typical home, or half a day or so for a commercial building. In a small place like East Hendred, access is usually the main thing to plan. Mention any outbuildings, barns or garages you want included, and anything about the roof you already know. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. We check the airspace and seek any permission needed.
  3. Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. You receive a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

What we cannot see

Our survey isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey, a structural engineer’s report or an asbestos survey. Other limits to bear in mind:

  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • Photos in conditions too poor to fly

If in doubt, phone 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we will recommend the right survey. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Fragile roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Valleys and parapet gutters

Why get it checked now?

It is hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. You get photos of every part we can see, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. That helps you put the work in order. Older and listed buildings around East Hendred may need consent and matching materials for repairs, so leaving a defect until it’s urgent leaves less time to plan.

Our price is from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on how big and how high the roof is, access and the package you choose.

East Hendred questions

Can you fly a drone over a roof in East Hendred?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.

How do I find out if my home in East Hendred is listed?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case, and councils can also use Article 4 directions.

What’s the best way to book?

To arrange a survey, ring 07833 053749 or email us with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.

How long is the visit?

Most surveys take roughly 1–2 hours for most houses, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. We will confirm the timing when you book.

Do I need to be at home?

That depends on the survey. For inside areas and the loft space, someone has to give us access, while outside access can be discussed when you book.

Is it a structural engineer’s report?

No. We are experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs such as sagging are noted, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.

Do you need to get into the loft?

If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft cannot be reached safely, the report says so.

How the survey changes by roof type

Steep slate and tile slopes

On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.

Chimney stacks

The drone shows the outside of the stack, not a flue, gas or sweep inspection. If the flue needs a specialist, we’ll tell you.

Can I check my roof myself?

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Overflowing water can point to a blockage or a sagging run.

A lot can be seen from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

We survey roofs for landlords and agents as well as homeowners. The report gives you a dated record of the roof, with photos, which helps you plan work between tenancies.

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.
