Drone roof survey in Shorthampton
Drones need reasonable weather. We do not fly in high wind or heavy rain, because control and safety come first. If the day turns out unsuitable, we will talk about another date or inspect what we can by other means. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. If you’ve noticed outlets choked with leaves and silt and cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots, a survey will tell you what’s going on, on valleys and parapet gutters, chimney stacks and tall and steep roofs alike.
Villages like Shorthampton often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
After the visit, you get a photo-illustrated written report, emailed to you. It sets out the condition of the roof, any defects and our written recommendations.

Shorthampton questions
Is my home in Shorthampton listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it is in a conservation area. Listed building consent is needed for changes that affect a listed building’s special interest, and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is Shorthampton within the area you cover?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
How long does a drone roof survey take?
Allow about one to two hours at most homes, or half a day or so for a commercial building. We will give you an idea of timing when you book.
How experienced are you?
We have more than 20 years’ experience and have carried out more than 5,000 surveys across London and the South East.
What does the report include?
You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. The most urgent items are made clear.
Does your drone take thermal images?
Not as part of the drone survey, which is about close-up photos. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey, and its findings are checked with moisture readings.
Can you survey at the weekend?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day. Just say which days work for you.
Why act early in Shorthampton
It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. Our report shows the condition of each area, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. You can tackle the urgent items first. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Shorthampton, driving rain gets into any weakness, and older walls, once damp, take a long time to dry.
Prices start from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can be seen safely and which survey you book.

Different roofs, different checks
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Flat roof coverings wear out at different rates. Photos show how the covering is wearing.
Ridges and hips
The ridge takes wind from both sides. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.
What a drone roof survey looks like in Shorthampton
Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Older buildings in west Oxfordshire often have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from the ground, drone photos and thermal images add detail.
For any home in Shorthampton, it’s the small, early fault that is cheapest to put right. The streets around a church such as Church of All Saints are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that is where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

What you can safely check yourself
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.
It helps to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book, as it helps us focus the survey.
What we cannot see
It’s useful to know what a survey will not do before booking:
- A structural engineer’s report
- Flights in strong wind or a downpour
- Flights in a restricted zone without permission
If you’re not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form and we’ll give you a straight answer. The full list of what we check.
Roof types and parts we check
- Tall and steep roofs
- Chimney stacks
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Valleys and parapet gutters
- Fragile roofs
- Large and complex roofs
The survey, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. All in, the survey usually takes roughly 1–2 hours for a house, and longer for a large or complex roof. Older roofs in small places like Shorthampton can have low, tight loft spaces, so it is useful to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. We only go where it is safe.
- We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
- Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- Leave a clear route to the loft
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
How to book
If you’re buying, it’s useful to book soon after your offer is accepted, so there’s time to use the report before exchange. Otherwise, simply ring 07833 053749 or use the contact form whenever suits you.

Practical tips
From years of surveys, a few habits stand out:
- Clear the loft hatch so we can check inside too
- Let us know what you want to see
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
The report gives any roofer you ask to quote a clear brief. They’ll see exactly where each defect is, so their quotes cover the same ground.
After a storm, check from the garden and the street. Pieces of slate or tile on the ground mean something has moved. A drone can show exactly what has moved.
