Drone roof survey in Great Tew
A drone can see more than your roof, so we take care. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it’s worth letting them know about the visit. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. We survey large and complex roofs, chimney stacks and tall and steep roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are ridge pieces that have lifted and eroded pointing on a chimney stack.
Villages like Great Tew often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.
With the Standard Survey, you also get moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

The survey, step by step
Every roof is different, but as a rough guide the survey takes about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. You’re welcome to ask questions while we are there. Around Great Tew, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there is a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- You give us the address and let us know about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- Before take-off, the wind, the weather and the launch spot are checked.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.
Preparing for the visit
- Clear the way to the loft hatch
- Keep pets out of the way during the survey
- For flats, make sure roof access has been agreed

Flying and imaging in Great Tew
Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Older buildings in west Oxfordshire often have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. Many roofs like these cannot be judged properly from the pavement, and that is where a view from above or a thermal image earns its place.
Anyone responsible for a site like Great Tew County Primary School will know that a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
Great Tew is about 8 miles south-west of Banbury, in Oxfordshire. We cover Great Tew and the rest of Oxfordshire, as part of our work across London and South East England. Great Tew is one of the places in Oxfordshire we cover. We also survey roofs in Oxford.
Surveys in OX7 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If you need a drone roof survey at a property on The Square, Old Road and New Road or a nearby road, we can help. Neighbouring places we cover for drone roof surveys include Little Tew (1 mile south-west), Swerford (2 miles north-west), Wigginton (2 miles north), South Newington (3 miles north) and Church Enstone (3 miles south). Larger places within reach include Banbury (8 miles north-east), Bicester (12 miles east), Witney (12 miles south), Carterton (15 miles south-west), Kidlington (11 miles south-east) and Bure Park (12 miles east).

Common roof problems in Great Tew
Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Older slates and tiles break easily, and some sheet roofs are fragile. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.
Signs worth acting on include:
- Lead work pulling away at abutments
- Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
- Hidden gutters full of leaves
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St Michael and All Angels, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Before you book any roof surveyor
- How long the report takes to arrive
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- What they will not be able to tell you
- Are they insured for the work?
Can I check my roof myself?
Look up at the roof after a storm, from ground level: broken slates or tiles in the garden, gaps along the ridge or loose lead are signs to note. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.
A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. You won’t see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level.
Questions from Great Tew
Will you come out to Great Tew?
We do. A small place gets exactly the same survey as a big one.
Are there drone restrictions around Great Tew?
Normally it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.
How do I arrange a drone roof survey in Great Tew?
The quickest way is to ring 07833 053749 or email us. Give us the address and a few details about the roof. Surveys run seven days a week.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only if it’s safe. We look at everything that can safely be seen: from the ground, from windows, from inside the roof space, from the roof where it is safe and by drone where applicable. The report says if anything couldn’t be seen.
What happens next?
You will get the report by email. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation.
How much is a survey?
Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final figure depends on the roof and the package you choose.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. We check the roof, not the whole building, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

Tips that help
You don’t need to be a roofer to help. What helps most:
- Keep pets indoors during the flight
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Check there is room outside for the drone to take off
- Book early if you are near an airport
You get an in-person consultation with the Premium Survey to talk through the photographs and findings. You can ask about anything that is not clear.
Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, and early repairs keep water out.
What a survey costs
All our prices include VAT. The things that change the price are:
- If the survey needs thermal imaging or a drone
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- The height of the building and how the roof can be seen safely
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
To find out what your survey will cost, phone 07833 053749 or drop us an email and let us know about the roof. The price is agreed before a date is set.
What we need to know
We’ll usually ask about:
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window
- The reason for the survey, such as buying, a leak or storm damage
- The kind of building and roof involved
For a price for drone roof surveys in Great Tew, ring 07833 053749 or email us. The address, the type of property and what you’d like to know help us give you an accurate price.
How the survey changes by roof type
Valleys and parapet gutters
Hidden gutters and valleys sit out of sight. From above, we can see the linings, the joints and any debris.
Ridges and hips
Wind lifts loose ridge and hip tiles. Spotting them early stops them falling.
