Stonesfield Drone Roof Survey
Close-up drone photographs of roofs that are hard to reach in Stonesfield, carried out by an experienced roof surveyor. Every survey comes with a written report and photographs.
- Moss and weeds taking hold up top
- Flashings that have come away
- Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
Drone roof survey in Stonesfield: what you get
Drones need reasonable weather. We do not fly in strong wind or heavy rain, because control and safety come first. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast before the visit and again on site. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We are often asked to look into blocked valleys and parapet gutters and coverings that have slipped high up on the roof, on tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs.
Villages like Stonesfield frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.
It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

How it works
Safety comes first on every visit. Everything that can safely be seen is inspected, and if part of the roof can’t be seen, the report says so. The survey usually takes about 1–2 hours at a typical home, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. Older rural homes like those around Stonesfield can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we cannot see is noted.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey
- Make sure pets are kept safely away
- Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
- Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Your questions about drone roof surveys in Stonesfield
How do I find out if my home in Stonesfield is listed?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. Either can affect what roof work is allowed, so it is worth checking before planning any.
Is drone flying allowed in Stonesfield?
That depends on where the roof is and on the weather. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
How soon will I get the report?
Report times are set by the package. Basic: within 48 hours. Standard: 24 to 48 hours. Premium: the same day. Mention any deadline when you book.
Does the report include photographs?
Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, so you can see what we mean.
Do you need to get into the loft?
Where it’s relevant to the survey and there’s safe access, yes. A clear path to the hatch helps, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.
Will you walk on the roof?
Only if it’s safe. We inspect whatever is safely visible: from the ground, from windows, from inside the loft space, from the roof where it’s safe and by drone where it applies. Anything we can’t see is noted in the report.
Is it a structural engineer’s report?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it does not include calculations. If we see signs that need an engineer’s opinion, we will recommend one.
When to book a survey in Stonesfield
Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. From the ground, you rarely see cracked flaunching or loose pots. Close-up drone photos show their condition.
People typically book a survey when they’ve noticed something like this:
- Debris building up in hidden gutters
- Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
- Chimney tops in poor condition
- Plant growth and moss on the roof
Take a building like Stonesfield School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Useful tips for Stonesfield property owners
Most of what helps is simple and safe from the ground. Our suggestions:
- Keep pets indoors during the flight
- Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- Move stored items away from the hatch
Your report arrives by email, with close-up photographs from the flight. Findings are set out in plain English, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.
Every so often, look in the roof space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Take photos of any changes.
Drone roof surveys around Stonesfield
About 3 miles east lies Blenheim Palace, a reminder of how long the area around Stonesfield has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight.
For an older house near a landmark such as Church of St James the Great, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys
Prices always include VAT. What changes the price is:
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- The type of building, from a house to a block or an office
- How big the roof is
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
One thing that affects the price is the package: from £150 for Basic, £250 for Standard and £400 for Premium, with VAT included. Size, height and access can affect the price too.
Booking your survey
We’ll normally ask about:
- Dates you are working to, like exchange
- Where the property is, with the postcode
- The reason for the survey, like buying, a leak or storm damage
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
We confirm the price for your survey before booking, so you know where you stand. Prices start from £400, including VAT. For a price for your roof, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email.
How the survey changes by roof type
Steep slate and tile slopes
Steep roofs are risky to walk on. A drone photographs them closely from a safe position.
Ridges and hips
The ridge takes wind from both sides. From above, we can see loose ridges and missing mortar.
Why it is worth a survey now in Stonesfield
It’s hard to plan maintenance for a roof nobody has looked at. You get photos of every part we can see, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant. You can tackle the urgent items first. For older village homes like those around Stonesfield, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.
