Tips that help

These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:

  • Keep dogs indoors during the visit
  • Allow time for permission if you are in a flight restriction zone
  • Check there is room outside for the drone to take off
  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property

Your report arrives by email, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Each finding is explained in plain words, and recommendations are ranked by urgency where that helps.

Every so often, look in the loft space with a torch, keeping to boarded areas. A drone sees the outside, but the loft shows leaks and condensation from below. Photograph anything new.

The weather decides whether a drone can fly. We do not fly in high wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the weather turns, we will agree another day. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. If you’ve noticed slates or tiles shifted by high winds and blocked valleys and parapet gutters, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

Older buildings in small places like East End may be listed or in a conservation area. A look from the air or with a thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Check with the council before planning any work on a listed building or one in a conservation area.

The Standard Survey adds moisture detection, a structural check and a follow-up consultation. The Premium Survey goes further, with thermal imaging, drone inspection where applicable, structural analysis and an in-person consultation.

What we can’t see

Before booking, it’s worth knowing what a survey will not do:

  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • Flights in strong wind or a downpour

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before you book. The full list of what we check.

What this survey covers

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs

What we do, step by step

We look at the roof from outside and, where it’s relevant and there is safe access, from inside the loft space too. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit typically takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Somewhere like East End needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. We start with the address and what you’d like checked.
  2. Any flight restriction at the address is checked, with permission requested if required.
  3. On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
  4. Close-up photos are taken of each slope, chimney, valley and gutter, with the drone always in view.
  5. We email the report with close-up photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed
  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Advice

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

We confirm the price for your survey before booking. This is what makes a difference:

  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • How big the roof is
  • Whether it is a home or a commercial building
  • Basic, Standard or Premium

There are three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all inc. VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.

Helping us price your survey

There is no need for technical words. Just let us know:

  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • The kind of building and roof involved
  • The address and postcode of the property
  • Any photos you have, taken from the ground or a window

Our phone lines are open seven days a week. For a price or to book, phone 07833 053749 or email us.

Do you need a drone roof survey in East End?

Many roofs are never seen properly from ground level. Rear slopes, valleys and the tops of chimneys are hidden. Faults there can go unnoticed for years, which is why owners turn to a drone.

Problems we come across often include:

  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Slipped or missing slates on a high roof
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles

If you live in an older home near St Mary's Church, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Before you book any roof surveyor

  • Is VAT included in the price?
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Whether they hold professional indemnity and public liability insurance
  • How soon the report will arrive

What a roof survey includes

Checking the roof from the ground

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

You can learn a lot from ground level. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.

Drones, thermal imaging and East End roofs

Older buildings in west Oxfordshire often have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. Older houses in the South East frequently have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. About 2.7 miles east lies Blenheim Palace, a reminder of how long the area around East End has been built on. Older homes in the wider area frequently have features worth a closer look, like lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and the council can say whether a home is in a conservation area.

For site and facilities teams at buildings like Combe CofE Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

East End is about 4 miles north-east of Witney, in Oxfordshire. Wherever you are in East End, we can carry out drone roof surveys at your property. We cover towns and villages across Oxfordshire. For surveys nearby, see our Oxford page.

East End questions

Is East End within the area you cover?

We do. Villages and rural addresses get the same survey as a town house, with the route planned beforehand.

Is my home in East End listed or in a conservation area?

We can’t confirm that for you, but Historic England’s list and your council can. A change of roofing material may need consent in either case.

What if it’s windy or raining on the day?

The flight waits for better weather. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, so a new date is agreed with you, or look from other safe viewpoints if you’d rather.

Is a drone roof survey a thermal survey?

No, the drone survey is photographic. For thermal imaging, look at the Premium Survey or our thermal roof survey, and its findings are checked with moisture readings.

How long does the visit take?

Expect it to take roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. That includes checking the site and the weather before take-off.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and sampling aren’t something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it is disturbed.

Will the drone film my neighbours?

The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring gardens or windows. We inspect only the roof you’ve asked about. A word with next door beforehand is a good idea.
