Why it is worth a survey now in Headington
A drone record gives you a baseline. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It helps when you plan ahead. On a bungalow or cottage around Headington, the roof sits close to the rooms below, so water can show inside quickly once it gets past the covering. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.
Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on how big and how high the roof is, how it can safely be seen and which survey you book.

How a drone roof survey works in Headington
Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If permission is not given, we inspect by other means and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. Typical surveys look at ridge and hip pieces working loose and moss and weeds taking hold up top, across large and complex roofs, fragile roofs and chimney stacks.
In smaller places like Headington, many homes are bungalows and houses with roofs you can partly see from the ground. The parts you cannot see, like rear slopes, valleys and chimney tops, are where a drone or thermal camera adds detail. Both depend on the weather on the day, as calm, dry conditions suit both. Close-up images often show wear on ridges, verges and flashings that can’t be judged properly from ground level.
You receive the findings by email, ready to forward to whoever needs them. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Tips from our surveys
These tips come from what we see on roofs every week:
- Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off
- Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
- Keep dogs indoors during the visit
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
There is a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit, and whether work has done its job.
Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, so small faults are dealt with early.
When to book a survey in Headington
Big commercial and industrial roofs cover a lot of ground. The drone covers the surface area by area, showing patterns of wear that are hard to spot up close. That gives a clearer picture of the roof as a whole.
Look out for signs like these:
- Lead work pulling away at abutments
- Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
- Outlets choked with leaves and silt
- Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
For site and facilities teams at buildings like St Andrew's Church of England Primary School, thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- What insurance they carry
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- What the report includes, and whether it has photographs
- How they’ll see the roof: from ground level, the loft, the roof or by drone
Common questions in Headington
Is my home in Headington listed or in a conservation area?
You can check whether a building is listed on Historic England’s list, and your council can tell you if it’s in a conservation area. If a home is listed, changes that affect its special interest need listed building consent, and in a conservation area re-roofing in different materials may need permission.
Do you cover smaller places like Headington?
Yes, Headington is covered. We survey roofs across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. Longer journeys are simply planned beforehand.
Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?
No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but only a specialist asbestos surveyor can confirm it. It may be present in buildings built or refurbished before 2000.
Do you hold CAA registration for the drone?
Yes. We hold both a CAA Flyer ID and an Operator ID. The drone we use weighs under 250g.
Does your drone take thermal images?
Our drone survey is about close-up photos. If you need thermal imaging, it is part of the Premium Survey, as a separate check.
Can you survey a roof inside a flight restriction zone?
Sometimes, with permission. Airports such as Gatwick, Luton and Southampton have flight restriction zones, where the airport or air traffic control must give permission first. If permission is not given, the roof is inspected from other safe viewpoints.
How quickly is the report sent?
The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.
Can I check my roof myself?
It is useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Share it with us when you book and it will help the survey.
Your own check is a good start, but it isn’t a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground.
Drone roof surveys around Headington
Older buildings in west Oxfordshire often have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first.
The streets around a church such as St Andrew's Church are often among the oldest in a place, and if yours is one of the older homes nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. Historic houses such as Holywell Manor, about 1.6 miles west, show how far back building around Headington goes. Close-up aerial shots and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it.

How it works
It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: a purchase, a leak, a storm, new work or simply peace of mind. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take about one to two hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. A visit to Headington is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed beforehand. Weekday and weekend visits are both possible. Let us know about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
- We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.
How to prepare
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
- Keep pets in another room
- If you’re buying, let the agent know when we’re coming
