How a drone roof survey works in South Stoke
They suit tall buildings, steep or large roofs and roofs that are hard to see from the ground. They’re useful where walking on the roof could damage it or is not safe. You get close-up views without anyone setting foot on the roof. We check the airspace for your address ahead of the visit. We’ll tell you if another approach would work better. We survey valleys and parapet gutters, flat roofs on upper floors and fragile roofs, and the problems we’re asked to look at most are flashings that have come away and storm damage on steep or tall roofs.
In a village or hamlet like South Stoke, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are looked at ahead of the visit. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
Findings are set out part by part, from the coverings down to the gutters, with a note and a photo for each point. You’ll see the good as well as the bad.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in South Stoke
Not every roof can take a person’s weight. Older slates and tiles break easily, and some sheet roofs are fragile. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.
Things that often lead to a survey include:
- Standing water on a flat roof
- Cracked mortar along the ridge
- Lifted or split lead flashings
- Cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots
If you look after a building such as South Stoke Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.
Before you book anyone
- What follow-up you get after the report
- If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- Whether the loft is part of the inspection
Flying and imaging in South Stoke
Basildon Park, about 3.5 miles south, is one of the historic houses in the wider area around South Stoke. On older houses around here, roofs frequently carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.
For an older house near a landmark like Church of St Andrew, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Practical tips
There is plenty you can do without going near the roof. What helps most:
- Share the postcode so we can check for restrictions
- Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
- Allow for a change of day in poor weather
- Tell us about any leaks or concerns
The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to talk through the photos and findings. It’s a chance to ask about anything in the report.
Keep the roof space ventilated. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

Your questions about drone roof surveys in South Stoke
Does a conservation area affect roof work in South Stoke?
Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.
Is drone flying allowed in South Stoke?
Typically it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. Strong wind or a downpour also stops a small drone flying.
How many surveys have you done?
More than 5,000 surveys over 20+ years, across London and South East England.
Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?
Our cover is professional indemnity plus public liability.
Will you photograph what you find?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and the report uses them to show each finding alongside our recommendations.
What happens next?
The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
Is this a RICS survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, so it is not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
Roof by roof
Steep slate and tile slopes
Widespread slipping on slate usually means nail fatigue. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.
Large commercial roofs
Older cement sheet roofs may contain asbestos. We flag it in the report so a specialist asbestos surveyor can check.
The survey, step by step
Once we’ve finished looking, we write up our findings as a photo-illustrated written report, sent to you by email. On timing, most surveys take about 1–2 hours for a house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. For a village or hamlet like South Stoke, the journey is planned beforehand: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect everything that’s safely in view, inside and out.
- We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
- We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
- We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
- If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
- Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.
Preparing for the visit
- Check pets are kept safely away
- Unlock side gates and any roof access doors
- Agree roof access with the managing agent if it is shared
