Common questions in Moulsford
Is Moulsford within the area you cover?
Yes. Moulsford is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We survey roofs across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when booking.
How do I find out if my home in Moulsford is listed?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
What happens after the survey?
You receive the written report by email, with photos and recommendations. You can use it to talk to a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent, whichever applies.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and visible signs like sagging are noted, but calculations and an engineer’s opinion are outside what we do. If one is needed, the report says so.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey on any day from Monday to Sunday, during the day, which suits people who work during the week. Let us know your preferred days as you book.
Can you survey a shared roof?
Yes, if the freeholder or managing agent agrees access. On a shared roof we can only inspect the parts we’re allowed to reach.
Is a drone roof survey a thermal survey?
Our drone survey is about close-up photographs. Thermal imaging comes with the Premium Survey.
How a drone roof survey works in Moulsford
Drones need reasonable weather. We do not fly in strong wind or heavy rain, because control and safety come first. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Light wind and dry weather give the clearest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. If you are worried about worn lead at chimneys and walls and standing water on a flat roof, we can find out what’s behind it, whatever the roof.
Some older homes in villages like Moulsford are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
The report doesn’t just list problems. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

- Close-up photos of next door’s property
- A structural engineer’s report
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)

What we do, step by step
You do not need to do much on the day. Point out anything you’ve noticed, such as stains, drips or loose pieces, and we’ll take it from there. A typical survey takes between one and two hours on an ordinary house; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. Cottages and farmhouses around Moulsford frequently have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.
- We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
- Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
- We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.
Before we arrive
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
- Clear the way to the loft hatch

Advice
Useful tips for Moulsford property owners
Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They’re worth knowing whatever the roof:
- Check the loft can be reached
- Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
- Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off
File the report and photos with your home documents. They’re a useful baseline for future surveys, and they help if you sell.
Do not block the vents at the eaves. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation. Check insulation does not block the airflow.
Checking the roof from ground level
If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, and look for staining, damp timber or daylight coming through.
What you can’t do safely is get up close. Slates, tiles, flat roofs and rooflights can give way. That is where a survey comes in.
Flying and imaging in Moulsford
Historic houses such as Basildon Park, about 3.9 miles south, show how far back building in the area around Moulsford goes. Older homes in the wider area often have features worth a closer look, such as lead valleys, tall stacks and roofs that have been patched over the years, and any change of roofing material on a listed home needs checking with the council first. West Oxfordshire’s older buildings frequently carry Cotswold stone slates, and a few villages in the county keep their thatch. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Steep or complicated roofs are frequently hard to see from ground level, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.
The streets around a church such as Church of St John the Baptist are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps. Anyone responsible for a site like Cranford House School will know that a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.
