Drone roof survey in Crowell Hill

We carry out drone roof surveys in Crowell Hill and across London and South East England, subject to airspace checks and the weather. We fly on weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Every address is checked for airspace restrictions first. The report includes the drone photos and our recommendations. To ask whether a drone survey suits your roof, phone 07833 053749 or email us with the address. Common reasons to book are cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below and slates or tiles shifted by high winds, across large and complex roofs, valleys and parapet gutters and tall and steep roofs.

In a small place like Crowell Hill, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It’s useful straight away, and a good reference for later, for instance when you want to check whether anything has changed.

When to book a survey in Crowell Hill

Height and steep pitches make close inspection risky. Tall townhouses, blocks of flats and offices are typical. We fly from the ground and bring the camera close to the roof.

Things that frequently lead to a survey include:

  • Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
  • Ridge pieces that have lifted
  • Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
  • Worn lead at chimneys and walls

Take an older house close to Church of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Questions from Crowell Hill

Will you come out to Crowell Hill?

Yes. Crowell Hill is within the area we cover, which takes in towns, villages and rural addresses. We work right across London and South East England. Let us know about access, parking and anything unusual about getting there when you book.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Crowell Hill?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.

Are there drone restrictions in central London?

Parts of central London are restricted, including areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs, and flights there need NATS permission. We check before every flight and seek permission where needed.

Does this replace a RICS home survey?

No. We’re experienced roof surveyors, and our survey covers the roof rather than the whole building. For the rest of the building, a RICS home survey is a separate job.

What will the report tell me?

Written findings with photographs, explaining the condition of the roof, any defects and our recommendations. Standard adds moisture detection and a structural check; Premium adds thermal imaging, drone inspection where it applies and structural analysis.

What if my home is near an airport?

Flight restriction zones around protected airports need permission from the airport or air traffic control before any flight. We check your address and ask for permission where it is required. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points.

What does a roof survey cost?

Prices start from £400, including VAT. Our Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT.

Different roofs, different checks

Ridges and hips

Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. We record what we see of their condition.

Valleys and parapet gutters

Some older terraces have a butterfly roof with a valley in the middle. You can’t see it from the street at all, but a drone shows it clearly.

Flying and imaging in Crowell Hill

West Oxfordshire’s older buildings frequently carry Cotswold stone slates, and a few villages in the county keep their thatch. Older houses in the South East often have slate or clay tile roofs, while many later estates have concrete tiles. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail. The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Flights in the open category stay under 120 m (400 ft), with the drone kept in sight.

Adwell House lies about 3.9 miles west, so building around Crowell Hill goes back a long way. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from the ground, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself.

Crowell Hill is about 5 miles south-east of Thame, in Oxfordshire. Bookings from Crowell Hill are handled just like any other: get in touch, agree the price and pick a day. Crowell Hill is one of the towns and villages in Oxfordshire where we work. We also survey roofs in Oxford.

The survey, step by step

It helps to start with what’s prompted the survey: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. That way we can focus on what matters to you. Most visits take roughly 1–2 hours on an ordinary house, and more on a big or complicated roof. Somewhere like Crowell Hill needs a little journey planning: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely, inside and out.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Before the survey

  • If you are buying, check with the agent that we can get in
  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Let us know about parking before the day

What you can safely check yourself

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Use a torch and stay on the joists or boards, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.

When you need someone else

Some things can’t be seen without opening up the roof, so a survey has limits:

  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • A flight on a day when the weather isn’t safe
  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll recommend the right survey. What a survey covers and doesn’t.

What we check

  • Chimney stacks
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Fragile roofs
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
