How a drone roof survey works in Tackley

Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. The Premium Survey includes a drone inspection where applicable, with a same-day report, structural analysis and an in-person consultation. There is a 12-month follow-up as well. If a drone will not help on your roof, we’ll say so. Every drone survey comes with a written report and close-up photographs. If you’re worried about moss and weeds taking hold up top and cracked slates and tiles out of sight from below, a survey will tell you what’s going on.

In a small place like Tackley, open ground can mean strong wind. Strong wind or heavy rain stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. Anything out of sight on the day is listed as such.

What a drone roof survey looks like in Tackley

The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons.

Take a building like Tackley Church of England Primary School: a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit. If you live in an older home near Church of St Nicholas, tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Tackley: your questions answered

Is drone flying allowed in Tackley?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Tackley?

Your council is the best source, with Historic England’s list for listed buildings. Both listing and conservation areas can limit changes of roofing material.

Do I need to be at home?

Not necessarily. If we only need the outside, we can agree that beforehand, but the loft and any rooms with damp need someone to let us in.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs.

What insurance do you have?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

Can you give me structural calculations?

No. We note visible signs such as sagging or deflection, but we are not structural engineers and don’t carry out calculations. If we think you need an engineer, the report says so.

What will the report tell me?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. Points are put in order of urgency where relevant.

Honest limits

Before booking, it is worth knowing what a survey will not do:

  • Whether the roof structure meets design loads
  • Close-up photos of next door’s property
  • Flights in a restricted zone without permission

If in doubt, ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we will suggest the right survey. What our survey covers.

Roof types and parts we check

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Chimney stacks
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs

Roof by roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

On slate roofs, slipped slates often point to corroded nails. Close-up photos show how widespread it is.

Flat roofs on tall buildings

Flat roof coverings wear out at different rates. We record the signs of age we can see.

Checking the roof from ground level

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from the ground or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from ground level, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

Practical tips

A few practical points come up again and again on our surveys. They apply to most roofs:

  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
  • Move stored items away from the hatch
  • Check there is room outside for the drone to take off

The Premium Survey report comes the same day. It includes the drone photos where a flight was possible, alongside the other checks in the package.

Keep the loft space ventilated. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Keep insulation clear of the eaves.

How it works

Before we start, tell us why you’ve booked: buying, a leak, storm damage, new work or just wanting to know where things stand. It helps us focus on what matters most to you. Most visits take between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Somewhere like Tackley needs a little journey planning: let us know about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. The roof is looked at from the ground, from windows, from the loft where there’s safe access and from the roof where it is safe.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. If permission is needed, we ask for it before the visit.
  3. Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Tell us about parking before the day
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand

Common roof problems in Tackley

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Older slates and tiles break easily, and fragile sheet roofs are dangerous to walk on. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.

Most people get in touch after spotting something like this:

  • Lead work pulling away at abutments
  • Wind damage high on the roof
  • Ridge and hip pieces working loose
  • Debris building up in hidden gutters

With Blenheim Palace about 3.8 miles south-west, the area around Tackley has a long history. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from the air or with a thermal camera does not touch the roof itself.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • Whether the inside of the roof is included
  • Whether VAT is in the quoted price
  • How soon the report will arrive
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
