How a drone roof survey works in Redbridge
Some roofs are hard or unsafe to reach. A drone takes close-up photos of those roofs from the air. You see slates, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters in detail, including slopes that cannot be seen from the street. Everything we find goes into a written report with photos. It also suits roofs that would be damaged by someone walking on them. Where a flight isn’t possible, we explain why. If you are worried about ridge pieces that have lifted and plant growth and moss on the roof, we can find out what’s behind it.
In a village or hamlet like Redbridge, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what can’t be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit, and the journey is planned beforehand. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.
It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can plan your next steps.

Airspace, weather and Redbridge roofs
The drone we use is under 250g, flown by a CAA-registered operator with a Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.
If you live in an older home near St Luke's Church, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. If you run a business near Templars Square, large commercial roofs are frequently easiest to see from above or with a thermal imager. If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Redbridge, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it pays to find faults before guests do.

What this survey cannot tell you
It’s a careful look at the roof, not the whole story. Its limits include:
- Whether the roof structure meets design loads
- Roofs and gardens beyond the one we’re surveying
- The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will tell you. What a survey covers and does not.
What this survey covers
- Tall and steep roofs
- Flat roofs on upper floors
- Chimney stacks
- Large and complex roofs
- Fragile roofs
- Valleys and parapet gutters
Checking the roof from the ground
Watch the gutters in a downpour, from a window or the ground. Water spilling over the edge can point to a blockage or a sagging run.
It’s useful to keep a record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry.

Different roofs, different checks
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Leaks often start at outlets, edges and around plant. They’re all captured in close-up, as far as the flight allows.
Valleys and parapet gutters
A butterfly roof drains to a central valley gutter. You cannot see it from the street at all, but it’s plain to see from the air.
Common questions in Redbridge
Are there drone restrictions around Redbridge?
Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone cannot fly safely in high wind or heavy rain.
Is Redbridge within the area you cover?
Yes, Redbridge is covered. We work right across London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it’s useful to know about access.
Which days do you carry out surveys?
Visits run seven days a week in the daytime. Just say which days work for you.
Does this replace a RICS home survey?
No. This is a survey of the roof only, and it isn’t a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.
What does a roof survey cost?
Our price is from £400, including VAT. Our three packages are Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, inc. VAT.
What do I do with the report?
You receive the written report by email, with photos and recommendations. It is yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.
Are you insured?
Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. If you need details for a managing agent or a building owner, just ask.
What we do, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the loft space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging. The whole visit typically takes about one to two hours for most houses, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Rural addresses near Redbridge can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
- We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
- We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
- The sub-250g drone takes close-up photographs of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
- You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Practical tips
A survey works best with a little help from you, before and after. Tips:
- A word with neighbours beforehand helps
- Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
- Move stored items away from the hatch
- Expect a little longer if permission is needed
Your report arrives by email, including the close-up photos taken by the drone. Findings are set out in plain English, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.
Keep gutters, valleys and outlets clear, ideally once the leaves have fallen. On tall buildings, use a professional with the right access equipment. Many leaks start with a blocked outlet.
Leave it or get it looked at?
Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It is useful for planning maintenance over the years. For an older or listed building in a place like Redbridge, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
There are three survey packages: Basic from £150, Standard from £250 and Premium from £400, with VAT included. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
