About our drone roof survey in Hinksey Hill

Drones need reasonable weather. We do not fly in strong wind or heavy rain, because the drone has to stay safely under control. If the weather turns, we’ll agree another day or inspect what we can by other means. We check the forecast ahead of the visit and again on site. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. We are often asked to look into tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack and debris building up in hidden gutters, across tall and steep roofs, chimney stacks and large and complex roofs.

Somewhere as small as Hinksey Hill, older roofs are often steep and partly hidden by trees or outbuildings. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Weather and airspace are checked before the visit, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Steep slopes and tall chimney stacks are where a close-up view adds the most.

Most points in the report come with a picture, so you can see each defect rather than just read about it. If something couldn’t be seen safely, the report is clear about it.

Landlords, agents and block managers in Hinksey Hill

Managing agents and residents’ management companies use roof surveys to plan maintenance. Recommendations are set out by urgency where it matters, which helps when budgeting.

Businesses and commercial landlords can book us too, including offices, shops and units. Bigger roofs take more time, and they’re priced for the size.

Flying and imaging in Hinksey Hill

Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. Older buildings in west Oxfordshire often have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. Across the South East, older homes tend to have slate or clay tiles, and many later ones concrete tiles. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up photos from the air and thermal images help.

If you look after a shop, office or commercial unit, for example near Westgate Shopping Centre, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see by drone or thermal camera. A roof leak in a hotel or guest house around Hinksey Hill means lost rooms as well as repairs. The streets around a church such as Church of St Lawrence are often among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps.

Hinksey Hill: your questions answered

Is my home in Hinksey Hill listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

Do you cover smaller places like Hinksey Hill?

Yes, we do. We survey roofs across London and South East England, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it is useful to know about access.

What do I do with the report?

We email you the written report with photos and recommendations. It is yours to share with a seller, insurer, roofer or managing agent, whichever applies.

Does the drone show the underside of the roof?

No. The drone photographs the outer surfaces, but not the loft or the underside. We look in the loft from inside where it’s safe.

When does the report arrive?

The Premium Survey report comes the same day, the Standard within 24–48 hours and the Basic within 48 hours. Each one is emailed, ready to forward.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you when you book.

What’s in the survey report?

It works through the roof part by part, in writing and with photos, finishing with recommendations. The most urgent items are made clear.

How the survey works

Photos are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Cottages and farmhouses around Hinksey Hill often have roofs at several levels, with lean-tos and outbuildings attached. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

How to prepare

  • Check the loft hatch can be reached
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Advice

Practical tips

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Let us know what you want to see
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns
  • Check there’s room outside for the drone to take off

The Premium Survey includes an in-person consultation to go through what the drone showed. It is a chance to ask about anything in the report.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Comparing surveys shows what is wearing, and early repairs keep water out.

Can I check my roof myself?

A lot can be seen from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Never climb onto the roof to look.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Photograph them and note the date, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.
