About our drone roof survey in Whitchurch-on-Thames

Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Parts of central London have restricted areas too, where NATS permission is needed. If we can’t fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and explain why. Prisons have their own drone restriction zones too. We’re often asked to look into plant growth and moss on the roof and gaps where slates or tiles have gone, on chimney stacks, tall and steep roofs and large and complex roofs.

Villages like Whitchurch-on-Thames often stand in open country, where wind can be strong. Strong wind or a downpour stops a small drone flying, and calm conditions also suit thermal imaging best. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

Every survey ends with a written report, with photos, sent by email. It explains the condition of the roof, the defects we found and what we recommend.

Should I look at the roof myself first?

Inside, the loft is a good place to look, with care. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Keep a simple record: when leaks happen, ground-level photos and any past roof work. Send it with your enquiry and it will help the survey.

What happens on the day

We work from the outside in: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the roof space where it can be reached. All told, expect an hour or two at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. Somewhere as small as Whitchurch-on-Thames, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
  3. Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. We email a written report with the photos and our recommendations.

Drones, thermal imaging and Whitchurch-on-Thames roofs

Within a mile and a half or so of Whitchurch-on-Thames there are several hotels, and like offices and blocks, hotels often sit under flat roofs. If you look after one, a large roof can be surveyed without guests having anyone working above them. About 1.7 miles west lies Basildon Park, a reminder of how long the area around Whitchurch-on-Thames has been built on. On older houses around here, roofs often carry the marks of earlier repairs, from replaced slates to new lead, and a listed home or one in a conservation area may need consent for changes of material.

If you own one of the older houses in the streets near Church of St Mary, steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from ground level, and that’s where a view from the air or with a thermal camera helps. If you look after a building such as Whitchurch Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

Whitchurch-on-Thames is about 5 miles west of Caversham, in Oxfordshire. Whether the building in Whitchurch-on-Thames is a house, a flat or a commercial unit, we can survey the roof on a weekday or at the weekend. Whitchurch-on-Thames is one of the places in Oxfordshire where we work.

Surveys in RG8 work the same way as everywhere else we cover. If you need a drone roof survey at a property on High Street, Swanston Field and Hardwick Road or a nearby road, we can survey it. What we are asked to look at in Whitchurch-on-Thames

Strong winds can lift slates, tiles and ridge pieces. Damage on a high or steep roof is hard to judge from the garden. Close-up photos make it clear what has been disturbed.

Problems we come across frequently include:

  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Flashings that have come away
  • Vegetation in valleys and gutters
  • Standing water on a flat roof

If you run a hotel or guest house in or near Whitchurch-on-Thames, a roof problem can mean rooms out of use, so it is worth knowing the roof’s condition.

What’s in a roof survey

Surveys for landlords and agents in Whitchurch-on-Thames

A roof problem in a let property affects your tenants as well as the building. A survey helps you spot issues early and plan the work with less disruption.

If the property is let, the agent or a tenant can let us in. We survey on weekdays and at weekends, which can make access easier.

Why act early in Whitchurch-on-Thames

A drone record gives you a baseline. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It helps when you plan ahead. Where a roof is exposed, as many are in small places like Whitchurch-on-Thames, driving rain gets into any weakness, and damp in older walls is slow to dry out.

Larger roofs, taller buildings and commercial roofs take longer, so they’re priced to match. The price is confirmed before you book.

What you get with us

  • A sub-250g drone, flown with a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • More than 20 years surveying roofs
  • More than 5,000 surveys completed
  • Drones and thermal imaging where applicable

Whitchurch-on-Thames: your questions answered

Is drone flying allowed in Whitchurch-on-Thames?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Do you cover smaller places like Whitchurch-on-Thames?

Yes, smaller places are covered as well as towns. We work right across London and South East England. Just mention lanes, gates or anything else about the route as you book.

Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?

No. This is a survey of the roof only, so it’s not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey. Many buyers have both.

Will I get photos?

Yes, every report has them. Pictures sit next to the findings they show, which makes the report easy to follow.

When does the report arrive?

Each package has its own report time. Basic is within 48 hours, Standard is 24–48 hours and Premium is the same day. If you have a deadline, such as an exchange date, tell us when you book.

Do you need to get into the loft?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement, as far as the space allows.

What happens after the survey?

The report comes by email, and what you do next is up to you: use it with a seller, an insurer, a roofer or a managing agent.
