What a drone roof survey does not cover

Every survey has limits, and it is better to know them up front. Keep these in mind:

  • Flying in a flight restriction zone without the airport’s permission
  • Roofs and gardens beyond the one we are surveying
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt

If you are not sure which survey you need, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email and we’ll give you a straight answer. What our survey covers.

What we look at

  • Tall and steep roofs
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Flat roofs on upper floors
  • Chimney stacks
  • Fragile roofs

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Sibford Gower

Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring homes and gardens. If your roof is joined to a neighbour’s, it’s worth letting them know about the visit. We survey the roof you’ve asked us to look at. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. We survey chimney stacks, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs, and common reasons people get in touch are slipped or missing slates on a high roof and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings.

Older buildings in small places like Sibford Gower may be listed or in a conservation area. A look by drone or thermal camera doesn’t touch the roof, so it’s a gentle way to see the condition of an old roof, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It’s useful right away, and a good reference for later.

The survey, step by step

Every roof is different; as a rough guide, the survey takes between one and two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. You are welcome to ask questions while we are there. Older rural homes like those around Sibford Gower can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. Each part is looked at from wherever it can be seen safely.

  1. First, we check whether a drone is the right tool.
  2. We agree a date, including weekends, subject to the weather.
  3. We fly over the roof, keeping the camera on the property we are surveying.
  4. We also look inside the roof space where it’s safe.
  5. Everything is written up, with the aerial photos and our advice.

How to prepare

  • Note where any stains or damp appear
  • Jot down any questions you want answered
  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at

Airspace, weather and Sibford Gower roofs

Older buildings in west Oxfordshire often have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons.

With Broughton Castle about 4 miles east, the area around Sibford Gower has a long history. Older roofs nearby can be steep and hard to see from ground level, and a survey from above or with a thermal imager doesn’t touch the roof itself. Take a building like Sibford Gower Endowed Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof. Take an older house close to Church of Holy Trinity: tall stacks and steep slopes are easier to judge with close-up aerial photos than from the pavement.

Can I check my roof myself?

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Do not go up yourself.

If you have a loft with safe access, take a look inside. Take a torch and only step on boards or joists, checking for stains, damp wood or chinks of daylight.

Roof by roof

Steep slate and tile slopes

Widespread slipping on slate usually means nail fatigue. We can see the extent of it from above.

Large commercial roofs

Cement sheet roofs on buildings from before 2000 may contain asbestos. We do not test for it, but we flag it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor.

Common questions in Sibford Gower

Is Sibford Gower within the area you cover?

Yes, we do. We work right across London and the South East, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is my home in Sibford Gower listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Will I get photos?

Yes. Photographs are part of every report, so you can see each point for yourself.

Will you walk on the roof?

Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Can a drone see inside my loft?

No. It shows what’s on the outside. The underside tells us things the drone can’t, so we check the loft too where we can.

Will the drone film my neighbours?

No, the camera is kept on your roof. Neighbouring homes and gardens aren’t the subject, and flights are kept short. A quick word with the neighbours is a good idea.

Can you survey at the weekend?

We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you as you book.

What happens if roof problems are left?

With drone photos, everyone can see the same thing. You can show exactly where the problem is. Older cottages and farmhouses around Sibford Gower can have roof timbers that have been there a very long time, and water through a failed covering can rot timber if it’s left.
