Questions from East Challow
Can you fly a drone over a roof in East Challow?
It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.
How do I find out if my home in East Challow is listed?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.
Can you give me structural calculations?
No. We are roof surveyors, not structural engineers, and it doesn’t include calculations. We’ll recommend an engineer if we see signs that call for one.
Do you test for asbestos?
No. Asbestos surveys and sampling are not something we do. Where a material might contain it, such as old cement sheets on a building from before 2000, the report flags it, with a recommendation to have a specialist asbestos surveyor check before it’s disturbed.
Do you survey roofs on blocks of flats?
Yes, as long as access is agreed. Roofs over flats are frequently shared, so the freeholder or managing agent needs to agree access. We can only inspect what we’re given access to.
How long is the visit?
Most surveys take about 1–2 hours for a house, and about three to four hours for a commercial roof. The report follows by email.
How quickly is the report sent?
That depends on the survey you book: Basic within 48 hours, Standard in 24–48 hours and Premium the same day. Reports are sent by email.
How a drone roof survey works in East Challow
Every flight starts with an airspace check. Flight restriction zones around airports such as Heathrow, Gatwick and London City need permission from the airport or air traffic control. Central London has restricted areas of its own, which need NATS permission. If we cannot fly, we use other safe vantage points instead and tell you. Prison sites also have drone restriction zones. Common reasons to book are slipped or missing slates on a high roof and loose ridge and hip tiles, across large and complex roofs, flat roofs on upper floors and tall and steep roofs.
Some older homes in villages like East Challow are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
The written findings come by email, easy to pass on to a roofer, an agent or an insurer. Turnaround is within 48 hours for Basic, 24–48 hours for Standard and same day for Premium.

Signs you need a drone roof survey in East Challow
Chimney tops take the worst of the weather. Cracked flaunching, loose pots and eroded pointing are often invisible from below. Close-up drone photos show their condition.
It is worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:
- Chimney tops in poor condition
- Coverings that have slipped high up on the roof
- Moss building up on slopes and in gutters
- Damage after a storm that cannot be seen from below
Anyone responsible for a site like St Nicholas CofE Primary School will know that thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.
Before booking anyone
- Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
- Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see
- Whether you get a written report with photos
- Which limits apply to the survey
What a survey costs
A few things affect what a survey costs:
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
- House, block, shop or office
- The roof’s overall size
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £400, including VAT.

Drones, thermal imaging and East Challow roofs
Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. Slate and clay tile are the usual coverings on older South East houses, with concrete tiles on many later estates. A drone or thermal camera adds most on the steep, tall and hidden parts of roofs like these. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.
Take an older house close to Church of St Nicholas: steep roofs, tall chimneys and hidden valleys can be hard to see from the ground, and that’s where a view from above or with a thermal imager helps.

Different roofs, different checks
Chimney stacks
The top of a stack is typically out of view. A drone gets close to the pots, flaunching, pointing and flashings.
Steep slate and tile slopes
On slate roofs, slipped slates frequently point to corroded nails. We can see the extent of it from above.
Leave it or get it looked at?
A drone record gives you a baseline. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It is useful for planning maintenance over the years. For older village homes like those around East Challow, the right replacement materials are not always easy to find quickly. Spotting a problem early leaves room to find them.
We offer three survey packages: the Basic Survey from £150, the Standard Survey from £250 and the Premium Survey from £400, all including VAT. What your roof costs depends on its size, access and what you want to find out.
Why us?
- Professional indemnity and public liability insurance
- More than 20 years surveying roofs
- An independent look at the roof
- Drone and thermal imaging surveys available
What happens on the day
We will ask a few questions first, like when any problem began and what work has been done before. Then the inspection itself takes an hour or two at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. In a hamlet or village like East Challow, a postcode doesn’t always lead to the right gate, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. After that, the survey runs as it would anywhere.
- You give us the address and tell us about the roof.
- Airspace restrictions are checked and permission sought where needed.
- On the day, we check the wind, weather and site before flying.
- The drone photographs the roof closely, kept in sight throughout.
- The findings, photos and recommendations reach you by email.
Preparing for the visit
- Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work
- For flats, check roof access has been agreed
- Keep pets inside or away from the areas we’re looking at
