Airspace, weather and Cowley roofs

The wider area around Cowley has a long history of building, with Holywell Manor about 2.1 miles north-west. Period homes nearby can have lead valleys, tall chimneys and a patchwork of past repairs. Within a mile and a half or so of Cowley there are several hotels, and like offices and blocks, hotels often sit under flat roofs. If you look after one, a large roof can be surveyed without guests having anyone working above them.

If you run a business near Templars Square, large commercial roofs are often easiest to see from the air or with a thermal camera. For site and facilities teams at buildings such as Our Lady's Roman Catholic Primary School, a drone or thermal camera can show a large roof in a single visit.

About our drone roof survey in Cowley

Drone roof surveys are available in Cowley and throughout London and the South East, where the airspace and the weather allow. We fly on weekdays and at weekends. Every address is checked for airspace restrictions first. The report includes the drone photos and our recommendations. To check whether your roof suits a drone survey, call 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address. Typical surveys look at coverings that have slipped high up on the roof and blocked valleys and parapet gutters, on tall and steep roofs, fragile roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.

Places like Cowley can be near small airfields or other airspace restrictions, so the Drone Safety Map is checked before any flight. Exposed sites can be windy, and a small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind, while thermal imaging also works best with little wind. Neighbours’ privacy is part of planning each flight, along with the airspace and the weather.

It is not only a list of defects. For each finding, it explains what it is, why it matters and what we’d recommend.

How it works

Photographs are taken throughout the visit, so the report shows exactly what we saw. We take close-ups from wherever is safe. A typical visit takes about 1–2 hours at most homes, rising to roughly 3–4 hours on a commercial building. A visit to Cowley is planned like any other: the time, the access and where to park are agreed beforehand. Visits can be on weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. Let us know about any garages, outbuildings or extensions you want included.

  1. We start by checking the airspace and any restrictions at your address.
  2. We arrange any permission that is needed before we fly.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. You receive a written report with photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • Move anything stored under the loft hatch
  • Agree roof access with the managing agent if it’s shared
  • Have any questions written down, so nothing gets missed

Advice

Common roof problems in Cowley

Many roofs are never seen properly from the ground. Rear slopes, valleys and the tops of chimneys are hidden. Problems in those places frequently go unseen until they leak.

It’s worth booking a survey if you’ve seen:

  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Gaps where slates or tiles have gone
  • Storm damage on steep or tall roofs
  • Plant growth and moss on the roof

If you live in an older home near Church of St Luke, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.

Before booking any roof surveyor

  • How long the report takes to arrive
  • How much experience they have with roofs like yours
  • Do they have a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID for drone work?
  • Which parts of the roof they’ll actually see

What’s in a roof survey

Leave it or get it looked at?

A drone record gives you a baseline. Next time, you can compare and see what has moved or worn. It helps when you plan ahead. With lower homes, common in places like Cowley, there’s little between a roof defect and the ceiling, so a small leak can mark a ceiling within a few storms. Catching the cause first saves redecorating as well.

A small, low roof with good viewpoints takes less time than a tall, complicated one, and the package matters as well. We will give you the figure before anything is booked.

Why us?

  • Visits on any day of the week
  • Thermal imaging and drone inspection where they help

Cowley: your questions answered

Do you cover smaller places like Cowley?

Yes, Cowley is covered. We cover the whole of London and South East England, from towns to the smallest villages. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

How do I find out if my home in Cowley is listed?

Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

What if my home is near an airport?

It depends on the airspace at your address. Flying inside a flight restriction zone needs permission from the airport or air traffic control. Book early if you think you may be affected.

What about my neighbours’ privacy?

The camera stays on your roof, not on neighbouring gardens or windows. We inspect only the roof you’ve asked about. A word with next door beforehand is a good idea.

Can you fly a drone in central London?

It depends where in central London. Restricted areas over Hyde Park, the City of London and the Isle of Dogs need NATS permission before a flight. Every address is checked first, and fall back on other viewpoints if we cannot fly.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

Will you go up on the roof?

Not always. Safety comes first, and fragile or steep roofs cannot always be walked on. We use safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

How we price drone roof surveys

What a survey costs depends on the time and equipment it needs. The main factors are:

  • The height of the building and how the roof can safely be seen
  • Whether it’s a home or a commercial building
  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • The number of roofs, including extensions and garages

Every price we give includes VAT. Our price is from £400, including VAT. You will know the exact price before you book.

What to tell us when you contact us

A little information up front helps. Please include:

  • Where any leaks, stains or damp patches show inside
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • How the loft is reached, if there is one

To arrange a survey, call 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the address and what you’d like to know about the roof. You’ll know the price before anything is booked.

DIY checks: what’s safe

During heavy rain, look at the gutters from ground level or a window. Water spilling over the edge can be a sign of a blockage or a gutter that has dropped.

Your own check is a good start, but it is not a survey. You will not see flashings, valleys or the backs of chimneys properly from the ground, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

What this survey cannot tell you

To be straight with you, a roof survey has limits:

  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)
  • What’s under the slates, tiles or felt
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey

If you are not sure which survey you need, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email and we will give you a straight answer before booking. The full list of what we check.
