Why it’s worth a survey now in Howe Hill

Photos from a drone survey show how the roof looks today. Comparing them with later photos shows what has changed. It helps when you plan ahead. In a place like Howe Hill, a barn or garage roof left to fail puts whatever is inside at risk. It is worth including them in a survey before a winter does the damage.

Our price is from £400, including VAT. The final price depends on the size and height of the roof, how it can safely be seen and the package you choose.

How a drone roof survey works in Howe Hill

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and well below the 120-metre height limit. Every flight is planned around the roof, the site and the people nearby. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. Safety comes first on every visit. We’re frequently asked to look into vegetation in valleys and gutters and blistered or cracked flat roof coverings, across chimney stacks, tall and steep roofs and fragile roofs.

In a village or hamlet like Howe Hill, roofs can be steep, old and hard to see from the lane. Close-up drone photos and thermal images help show what cannot be reached safely. Both the forecast and the airspace are checked first, and the journey is planned ahead of time. Older roofs with steep slopes and tall chimneys are where the extra view helps most.

Report times depend on the survey you book: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Practical tips

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed
  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Be ready to move the date if the weather turns

Premium also includes a 12-month follow-up. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit.

Do not block the vents at the eaves. Poor airflow lets condensation build up. Check insulation doesn’t block the airflow.

What happens on the day

We do not take risks to get a closer look. We inspect whatever is safely visible, and anything we can’t see is noted in the report. The survey typically takes roughly 1–2 hours at a house, including the airspace and weather checks before take-off. Rural addresses near Howe Hill can be hard to find from a postcode alone, so a few directions, or a note of a nearby landmark, help us arrive on time. The visit itself is the same as anywhere else.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. Before the flight, we check the conditions and the take-off spot.
  4. We fly the drone close to the roof to photograph it in detail, always in sight.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Preparing for the visit

  • For a flat or shared roof, check access with the building owner or managing agent
  • Tell us about any leaks, stains or damp patches you know of
  • Gather any invoices or paperwork from past roof work

Drone roof surveys around Howe Hill

Older buildings in west Oxfordshire frequently have Cotswold stone slate roofs, and some Oxfordshire villages still have thatch. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Older coverings on steep or tall roofs are hard to judge from below, so close-up close-up aerial shots and thermal images help. We fly a sub-250g drone and are a CAA-registered drone operator (Flyer ID and Operator ID). Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

Historic houses such as Stonor Park, about 3.2 miles south-east, show how far back building around Howe Hill goes. Aerial photos and thermal images let an old roof be checked without anyone disturbing it. Anyone responsible for a site like Icknield Community College will know that big roofs are where aerial photos and thermal images show the most at once.

What a drone roof survey does not cover

Without opening up the roof, some things stay hidden, so a survey has limits:

  • A structural engineer’s report
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey

If in doubt, call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll point you to the right survey before booking. The full list of what we check.

Howe Hill questions

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Howe Hill?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.

Is my home in Howe Hill listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. It matters most if you are planning to re-roof in a different material.

How long does the survey take?

Time on site depends on the roof, but most surveys take about 1–2 hours for a house, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. The report is sent afterwards by email.

Do you test for asbestos?

No. Asbestos surveys and testing are not part of what we do. We flag materials that could contain asbestos, such as cement sheets or soffits on pre-2000 buildings, and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.

Do you look in the loft space?

If the survey needs it and the loft space can be reached safely, yes. Please clear anything stored under the hatch, and if the loft can’t be reached safely, the report says so.

How experienced are you?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, across 20+ years of surveying roofs, with 98% customer satisfaction.

What does the report include?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photographs throughout. Anything we couldn’t see safely is noted too.

What affects the cost of drone roof surveys

Prices vary from roof to roof, and it comes down to:

  • How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
  • Extensions, dormers and garages with roofs of their own
  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone

What a survey costs comes down to the roof itself: its size, its height, how many sections it has and how it can be reached and seen safely. Prices start from £400, including VAT.
