Drone roof survey in Westcot

We fly a sub-250g drone, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. We keep it in sight throughout, and within the 120-metre limit that applies to all drones in the open category. Each flight is planned with the site and its surroundings in mind. Airspace and weather are checked before every flight. Safety comes first on every visit. Common reasons to book are ponding and splits on a high flat roof and lead work pulling away at abutments, across flat roofs on upper floors, chimney stacks and valleys and parapet gutters.

In a small place like Westcot, open ground can mean strong wind. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. The visit is planned around the forecast, along with the journey and access. A change in the forecast can mean moving the visit to another day.

The report is written in plain words, so it makes sense without any roofing background. Photographs show what each point refers to.

What a survey costs

The price reflects the time and kit the roof needs. The main factors are:

  • Building height and the viewpoints available
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages
  • Whether you choose the Basic, Standard or Premium Survey
  • The size of the roof

Prices start from £150, with VAT included, for a Basic Survey. Standard is from £250 and Premium from £400. You’ll know the exact price before booking.

What to tell us when you contact us

A little information up front helps. It is useful to include:

  • The style of property, from a terrace to a block
  • Where the property is, with the postcode
  • Any deadline, such as an exchange date
  • Any photos you have, taken from ground level or a window

Prices start from £400, including VAT. What you pay depends on the roof’s size, access and the package, so ring 07833 053749 or drop us an email with the details.

Drone roof surveys in Westcot: local notes

Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions, including zones around airports and prisons. Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. Open category rules keep flights below 120 m (400 ft) and the drone within sight at all times.

Take a building like The Ridgeway Church of England (C) Primary School: thermal images can show where wet insulation sits under a big flat roof.

Westcot is about 4 miles west of Wantage, in Oxfordshire. From houses to flats and shops in Westcot, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. Our Oxfordshire coverage includes Westcot and the places around it. There is also a page for Oxford.

Practical tips

Some practical points come up on survey after survey. They apply to most roofs:

  • Keep a clear space in the garden or drive for take-off
  • Make sure the loft can be reached
  • Let us know about any leaks or concerns
  • Expect a little longer if permission is needed

We email the report to you, with close-up photographs from the flight. Findings are set out in plain English, with recommendations prioritised by urgency where relevant.

Keep the loft space ventilated. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation. Make sure insulation doesn’t block the airflow.

The survey, step by step

The visit usually starts outside and finishes in the loft: first the slopes, edges and gutters from every safe viewpoint, then the loft space where it can be reached. All told, expect an hour or two at a typical home, and longer for a large or complex roof. Somewhere like Westcot needs a little journey planning: tell us about narrow lanes, gates, long drives and where we can park. On the day, we inspect whatever is safely visible, inside and out.

  1. We start by making sure a drone flight makes sense for the roof.
  2. A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
  3. Aerial photos are taken of your roof only, not the neighbours’.
  4. If the loft can be reached safely, it’s checked too.
  5. The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Before we arrive

  • Keep pets inside or away from the areas we are looking at
  • If the roof is shared, arrange access with whoever manages the building
  • Dig out any old roof reports or invoices

Common roof problems in Westcot

Walking on some roofs does more harm than good. Older slates and tiles break easily, and some sheet roofs are fragile. With a drone, the roof is photographed without anyone stepping on it.

Most people get in touch after spotting one of these:

  • Flat roofs on upper floors that hold water
  • Lifted or split lead flashings
  • Tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles

If you live in an older home near Church of the Holy Rood, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where close-up aerial shots and thermal images help.

Choosing a roof surveyor

  • If they fly a drone, whether they hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID
  • How they plan to inspect the roof safely
  • Their report turnaround times
  • Whether you can ask questions once you have the report

What’s in a roof survey

What this survey cannot tell you

Before you book, it is worth knowing what a survey will not do:

  • The underside of the roof (that needs an inside check)
  • Neighbouring roofs the owner hasn’t asked us to survey
  • A structural engineer’s report

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can call 07833 053749 or send us an email and we’ll tell you before booking. What our survey covers.

What this survey covers

  • Chimney stacks
  • Tall and steep roofs

  • Valleys and parapet gutters
  • Large and complex roofs
  • Fragile roofs

DIY checks: what’s safe

What you can’t do safely is get up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and a fall can be serious. That part is for a survey.

Look up at the roof after a storm, from the ground: pieces of tile or slate on the ground, a gap in the ridge or a lifted flashing are all worth noting. Leave anything above ground level to a survey.

Westcot: your questions answered

Does a conservation area affect roof work in Westcot?

The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.

Can you fly a drone over a roof in Westcot?

Usually it comes down to two things: the airspace at the address and the weather. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first. A small drone cannot fly safely in strong wind or heavy rain.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where applicable cover most of what’s needed, and the report notes anything we couldn’t see.

What happens next?

You’ll receive the report by email, and you decide the next step: raise it with a seller, send it to an insurer, brief a roofer or share it with a managing agent.

What does the report include?

You get our findings in writing, part by part, with photos. The most urgent items are made clear.

Do you carry professional indemnity insurance?

Professional indemnity and public liability insurance cover our surveys. Ask if you need details for a managing agent or building owner.

Do you cover Westcot?

Yes. We carry out drone roof surveys in Westcot, and the service is the same as everywhere else we work.
