Drone roof surveys in Sparsholt: local notes

Cotswold stone slates are found on older buildings in west Oxfordshire, and thatch survives in some of the county’s villages. In this part of the South East, older roofs are mostly slate or clay tile and many newer ones concrete tile. Where a roof is steep, tall or hard to see from ground level, drone photos and thermal images add detail. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.

If you live in an older home near Church of the Holy Rood, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where photos from the air and thermal images help. If you look after a building such as The Ridgeway Church of England (C) Primary School, a view from above covers a wide roof far faster than walking it.

Sparsholt is about 3 miles west of Wantage, in Oxfordshire. From houses to flats and shops in Sparsholt, the roof can be surveyed on a weekday or at the weekend. We cover towns and villages across Oxfordshire, large and small. We also survey roofs in Oxford.

Drone roof survey in Sparsholt

Neighbours’ privacy matters on every flight. The camera stays on your roof, not on gardens or windows next door. If your roof is shared, a word with next door beforehand helps. We inspect only what the owner has asked us to. Flights are kept as short as the job allows and focused on the roof in question. Typical surveys look at cracked mortar along the ridge and cracked flaunching or loose chimney pots, on chimney stacks, large and complex roofs and flat roofs on upper floors.

Villages like Sparsholt frequently stand in open country, where wind can be strong. A small drone can’t fly safely in strong wind or a downpour, and thermal imaging works best with little wind. We plan the journey, access and timing around the weather. If the day turns windy or wet, the visit can be moved.

How fast the report arrives depends on the package: the Basic Survey within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey on the same day.

Different roofs, different checks

Steep slate and tile slopes

Steep slopes are hard to inspect safely on foot. From the air, every course of slates or tiles can be seen, showing slipped, cracked and missing pieces.

Ridges and hips

Some ridges are fixed with mortar, others with dry-fix systems. Their condition is noted in the report.

Leave it or get it looked at?

Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. Close-up photos show what’s really there, slope by slope. Seeing the problem makes it easier to decide what to do. Matching old materials, like handmade tiles or stone slates, can take time to source. That’s one more reason to find defects before they become urgent.

The Premium Survey includes thermal imaging and drone inspection where applicable, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.

Take a look at what a roof survey costs and two real surveys.

Checking the roof from the ground

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight.

Fresh stains on ceilings or walls after rain are worth noting. Take a photo and write down when you saw it, as it helps a surveyor trace the cause.

How it works

We’ll ask a few questions first, about the roof’s history, any leaks and past repairs. Then the inspection itself takes roughly 1–2 hours at a typical home, with bigger or more complicated roofs taking longer. Older rural homes like those around Sparsholt can have a main roof, lower lean-to roofs and outbuildings all joined together. We work round each section in turn, from the safest viewpoints, and anything we can’t see is noted.

  1. First, we check the address for flight restrictions.
  2. We arrange any permission that’s needed before we fly.
  3. On the day, we check the weather and the site before flying.
  4. The drone captures close-up photos of the coverings, chimneys, valleys and gutters.
  5. Your report arrives by email, with close-up photos and recommendations.

Common questions in Sparsholt

Do you cover smaller places like Sparsholt?

Yes, Sparsholt is covered. Our area covers London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. Longer journeys are simply planned in advance.

Is my home in Sparsholt listed or in a conservation area?

For listing, use Historic England’s list; for conservation areas, ask the council. The answer matters most when a change of material is on the cards.

Will the drone film my neighbours?

We take care around neighbouring homes. The camera is pointed at your roof, not next door. Letting neighbours know ahead of time helps.

What does the report include?

It explains what we saw, what it means and what we’d suggest, with photos throughout. It also says if any part of the roof couldn’t be seen safely.

Do you climb onto every roof?

Only when it is safe. Some roofs are too steep or fragile to walk on safely. Safe viewpoints, the loft and a drone where applicable let us see the rest, and the report records anything we couldn’t see.

Can you survey a roof inside a flight restriction zone?

Sometimes, with permission. Airports such as Gatwick, Luton and Southampton have flight restriction zones, and a flight inside one needs the airport’s or air traffic control’s say-so. Without it, we inspect from other safe viewpoints.

How long have you been surveying roofs?

We have completed more than 5,000 surveys, over more than 20 years, with 98% customer satisfaction.

Tips that help

Getting the most from a drone roof survey starts before we arrive and carries on afterwards. Some tips:

  • Mention anything you’ve noticed on the roof
  • Give us the full address so we can check the airspace
  • Let neighbours know about the flight if your roof is shared
  • Keep pets indoors during the flight

There’s a follow-up after 12 months with the Premium Survey. It shows whether anything has moved or worn since the first visit, and whether work has done its job.

Plan a drone survey every few years for tall or large roofs. Regular photos make changes easy to spot, so small faults are dealt with early.

How we price drone roof surveys

To price your survey, we check:

  • The use of thermal imaging or a drone
  • The size of the roof
  • House, block, shop or office
  • Extra roofs, like extensions, dormers or garages

Every price we give includes VAT, and the report is not charged as an extra. Drone roof survey starts from £400, including VAT. Size, height and access decide where your roof falls.

Booking your survey

Before you get in touch, it’s useful to have:

  • Pictures of the roof from a safe spot, if you have them
  • Any deadline, like an exchange date
  • Any stains, drips or damp patches you’ve seen indoors
  • What made you get in touch

Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To find a date that works for you, phone 07833 053749 or email us.
