Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Hardwick
Drones need reasonable weather. We don’t fly in strong wind or heavy rain, because control and safety come first. If the weather turns, we will agree another day. The forecast is checked ahead of the visit and again on the day. Calm, dry conditions give the sharpest close-up photos. Waiting for a better day is better than a rushed flight. If you’re worried about debris building up in hidden gutters and standing water on a flat roof, a survey will tell you what’s going on, whatever the roof.
Older buildings in small places like Hardwick may be listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.
What you get is a clear record of the roof on the day we saw it. It is useful straight away, and a good reference for later, such as when you want to compare after future work.

Leave it or get it looked at?
Leaving a high roof unchecked means relying on what you can see from below. A drone replaces that guesswork with clear photographs, slope by slope. It is far easier to plan work when you can see the problem. For an older or listed building in a place like Hardwick, repairs may need matching materials and consent, so a defect found early gives time to plan the work properly.
Bigger, taller and commercial roofs take more time to survey, so the price reflects that. You will know the figure before booking.

Do you need a drone roof survey in Hardwick?
Big commercial and industrial roofs cover a lot of ground. A drone can photograph a large roof methodically. You see the whole roof, not just the parts near an access point.
We are frequently asked to look at:
- Ridge pieces that have lifted
- Flashings that have come away
- Blistered or cracked flat roof coverings
- Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
The streets around a church such as Church of St Mary are often among the oldest in a place, and if your house is among the older ones nearby, thin or patchy insulation under an old roof often shows up clearly on a thermal image.
Choosing a roof surveyor
- How they plan to inspect the roof safely
- Are they insured for the work?
- What the survey won’t cover
- Whether the inside of the roof is included
Roof by roof
Flat roofs on tall buildings
Flat roofs on tall buildings are frequently seen by nobody. A drone shows ponding, splits, blisters and worn upstands.
Steep slate and tile slopes
Widespread slipping on slate usually means nail fatigue. We can see the extent of it from above.
Hardwick questions
Can you fly a drone over a roof in Hardwick?
The answer turns on the exact location and the conditions on the day. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions. High wind or heavy rain also stops a small drone flying.
Is my home in Hardwick listed or in a conservation area?
The council and Historic England’s list are the places to check. It’s worth checking before planning roof work, as both can affect what’s allowed.
Do you carry out surveys on Saturdays and Sundays?
We survey seven days a week: weekdays, Saturdays and Sundays. Tell us which days suit you when booking.
Is it the same as a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 survey?
No. It’s a specialist roof survey, not a RICS Level 2 or Level 3 building survey. It focuses on the roof and can sit alongside a RICS survey.
Do you need to get into the loft?
If there’s a loft and safe access to it, yes. The loft space can show things the outside cannot, like damp timbers, staining or daylight.
Does the weather affect the survey?
Some surveys depend on the weather more than others. Drone flights need calm, dry weather, and thermal imaging works best with a dry roof, little wind and a sunny day beforehand. If the conditions are not right, we will talk to you about another date.
How soon will I get the report?
It depends on the package: the Basic Survey report arrives within 48 hours, the Standard Survey in 24 to 48 hours and the Premium Survey the same day. The report is emailed to you.
Can I check my roof myself?
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please do not climb up for a closer look.
The one thing to avoid is getting up close. Roofs are fragile and slippery, and falls from height are serious. That’s where a survey comes in, using safe viewpoints and a drone where applicable.

How the survey works
The visit has one job: to see as much of the roof as can safely be seen and record it clearly. Notes and photographs go into the written report. The visit normally takes about one to two hours for most homes, with the pre-flight checks included, and longer for big commercial roofs. Around Hardwick, older homes can have small or awkward roof spaces, so it helps to know whether there’s a loft hatch and how easy it is to reach. Only areas that can be reached safely are inspected.
- We confirm whether a drone suits your roof.
- A visit is booked for a weekday, Saturday or Sunday, weather permitting.
- The roof is photographed from the air, with the camera kept on your property.
- Where there’s safe access, we check the loft as well.
- The report sets out what we found, with photos and recommendations.

Airspace, weather and Hardwick roofs
Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. What can be done to an older roof may depend on listing or a conservation area. The council is the place to check, along with Historic England’s list, ideally before any re-roofing is planned.
