Drone roof surveys in Buscot

Drones, thermal imaging and Buscot roofs

Our drone weighs under 250g, and we hold a CAA Flyer ID and Operator ID. In the open category, flights stay below 120 m (400 ft) and within sight. Before any flight, we check the Drone Safety Map for airspace restrictions.

The streets around a church such as The Church of St Mary are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if your home is one of the older ones nearby, older roofs can be steep and hard to see from the street, which is where aerial photos and thermal images help.

Buscot is about 7 miles south-west of Carterton, in Oxfordshire. In Buscot, as across Oxfordshire, every roof gets the same careful survey. Our area takes in places right across Oxfordshire. For surveys nearby, see our Oxford page.

Drone roof surveys for homes and businesses in Buscot

Tall, steep, large or fragile roofs can’t always be inspected up close. A drone takes close-up photographs of those roofs from the air. It shows coverings, ridges, chimneys, valleys and gutters clearly. The photos go into a written report. It’s also a good option where walking on the roof could break slates or tiles. If we can’t fly, we tell you why. Typical surveys look at ridge and hip pieces working loose and tired mortar and pots at the top of a stack, on valleys and parapet gutters, tall and steep roofs and chimney stacks.

Some older homes in villages like Buscot are listed or in a conservation area. Neither a drone survey nor a thermal survey involves any work on the roof, which suits a building where any change needs care, before anyone decides what work it needs. Changes that affect a listed building’s special interest need listed building consent, so check with the council first.

The report works through the roof section by section, from the main slopes down to the gutters and outlets, with a note and a photo for each point. It records what’s sound as well as what is not.

What we are asked to look at in Buscot

From the pavement, most of a tall roof is out of sight. You cannot see the back slope, the valleys or the chimney tops. Faults there can go unnoticed for years.

Typical things we’re asked to look at include:

  • Moss and weeds taking hold up top
  • Eroded pointing on a chimney stack
  • Slates or tiles shifted by high winds
  • Loose ridge and hip tiles

With Buscot Park about 1 mile south-east, the area around Buscot has a long history. For older roofs nearby, a look by drone or thermal camera is a hands-off way to check condition.

Before booking anyone

  • What the survey won’t cover
  • What exactly goes into their report
  • Will they check the loft as well as the outside?
  • How they’ll see the roof: from the ground, the loft, the roof or by drone

What a roof survey includes

When you need someone else

No survey can tell you everything, and we’d rather be clear about that before you book. Keep these in mind:

  • Anything inside the loft or under the coverings
  • A flight where airspace permission is refused
  • Structural calculations (that’s a structural engineer’s job)

Not sure which survey suits your roof? You can ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll tell you before you book. The full list of what we check.

Rented homes, blocks and businesses

We survey roofs for landlords and letting agents as well as homeowners. A photo-illustrated written report gives you a clear record of the roof, useful for planning maintenance.

Any of our surveys can be booked by landlords, agents and building managers in Buscot. To discuss a property or a block, call 07833 053749 or email us.

How it works

We don’t take risks to get a closer look. Everything that can be seen safely is inspected, and anything we cannot see is noted in the report. Most visits take about one to two hours at a typical home, though large, tall or awkward roofs take more time. Somewhere as small as Buscot, access is often the only tricky part. Let us know about outbuildings, past repairs and any leaks you’ve noticed. Weekday and weekend visits are available.

  1. You give us the address so we can check the airspace.
  2. Where a flight restriction zone or restricted area applies, we seek permission first.
  3. We assess the wind, the weather and the surroundings before take-off.
  4. The sub-250g drone takes close-up photos of the roof, kept in sight throughout.
  5. We email a written report with the photographs and our recommendations.

Before the survey

  • Check pets are kept safely away
  • Have any paperwork from past roof work to hand
  • Tell us about parking before the day

DIY checks: what’s safe

A DIY look is useful, but it is not a survey. From the ground, valleys, flashings and the backs of chimneys are often out of sight, and those are details a survey looks at closely.

A lot can be seen from the ground. Binoculars help you spot slipped slates or tiles, gaps along the ridge and a leaning stack. Please do not climb up for a closer look.

Tips from our surveys

A little preparation and a few simple habits help. Some pointers:

  • Tell next door if the drone will be near their property
  • Make sure there’s room outside for the drone to take off
  • Shut pets inside while we fly
  • Book early if you are near an airport

The Premium Survey report comes the same day. Drone photos are included where we could fly, alongside the other checks in the package.

Keep the roof space ventilated. Condensation in the loft can damage timbers and insulation, and it is something only an inside check will show. Make sure insulation doesn’t block the airflow.

Questions from Buscot

Do you cover smaller places like Buscot?

Yes, we do. Our area covers London and the South East, and smaller places are part of that. The journey is planned ahead, so it helps to know about access.

Is drone flying allowed in Buscot?

It depends on the exact address and the weather on the day. Every flight is checked against the Drone Safety Map first, including zones around airports and prisons. The flight also waits for calm, dry weather.

Can you tell me if my roof has asbestos?

No. We can flag materials that might contain asbestos, but confirming it is a job for a specialist asbestos surveyor. Buildings built or refurbished before 2000 may contain it.

Will I get photos?

Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report alongside our recommendations.

Do you look in the roof space?

Yes, where the survey calls for it and there is safe access. We look for staining, damp, daylight and signs of movement.

Will you go up on the roof?

Only when it is safe. Safe viewpoints, the roof space and a drone where it applies cover most of what’s needed.

What happens next?

You’ll get the report by email, with photos and clear recommendations. With Standard there’s a follow-up consultation; with Premium, an in-person consultation, so you can talk the findings through.
