Gutter Survey in Berrick Salome
Wondering about the gutter at a property in Berrick Salome? We carry out gutter surveys in Berrick Salome and across Oxfordshire.
- Gutters that have fallen out of line
- Joints that drip after rain
- Blocked outlets and hoppers
How a gutter survey works in Berrick Salome
We look at the rainwater system above ground level: gutters, outlets, hoppers, downpipes and overflows. It is not a CCTV drain survey and we cannot see inside buried drains. If the problem looks like a blocked or broken drain below ground, the report will say so, with a suggestion to book a separate drain survey. Problems above ground, from split hoppers to leaking downpipes, are photographed and noted. Common reasons to book are overflowing eaves gutters and brackets that have dropped or snapped, across eaves gutters, valley gutters and outlets and hoppers.
In a village or hamlet like Berrick Salome, older cottages and farmhouses frequently sit alongside barns, outbuildings and a few newer houses. Older roofs may be clay tile, slate, stone or thatch, often with chimneys that have stood a long time. We report on whatever is safely visible, and thatch is a specialist material. On older roofs, it is typically the chimneys and lead flashings that need work first.
It is not only a list of defects. It explains what we found, why it matters and what we recommend, so you can decide what to do next.

What we’re asked to look at in Berrick Salome
Plenty of tiled and slate roofs carry moss, and rain washes it down into the gutters. With grit from the coverings, it forms a thick sludge that holds water in the gutter and gives plants somewhere to grow.
People usually book a survey when they’ve noticed one of these:
- Water spilling over the gutter edge
- Leaks at the gutter joints
- Choked outlets or hopper heads
- Overflowing valley or parapet gutters
The streets around a church such as Church of St Helen are frequently among the oldest in a place, and if you own one of the older houses nearby, its roof may have old fixings, lead flashings and chimneys that need a closer look.
Questions to ask before booking
- What the survey won’t cover
- Which viewpoints they use to see the roof
- What exactly goes into their report

Berrick Salome questions
Is my home in Berrick Salome listed or in a conservation area?
Check Historic England’s online list first, then ask the council about conservation areas and any Article 4 direction. It matters most if you’re planning to re-roof in a different material.
Do you carry out roof surveys in Berrick Salome?
Yes, Berrick Salome is one of the places we work. The survey and report are the same in Berrick Salome as anywhere else, and visits run on weekdays and weekends.
Do you test soffits or gutters for asbestos?
No. We do not test for asbestos. If rainwater goods or soffits look like they could contain asbestos, we note it and recommend a specialist asbestos surveyor checks them before they’re disturbed.
How do I book a survey in Berrick Salome?
To arrange a survey, phone 07833 053749 or send us an email with the address, the type of property and what’s prompted the survey. We’ll confirm the price and find a day that suits.
Will you check the drains below ground?
No. We check above-ground rainwater only, from the gutters to the bottom of the downpipes. Where a below-ground drain seems to be the problem, we’ll tell you.
How much is a gutter survey?
The Basic Survey starts from £150, the Standard from £250 and the Premium from £400, all inc. VAT. Just ring 07833 053749 or send us an email for a price.
Do you take photos of the roof?
Yes. We photograph the roof as we go, and they go into the written report.
What we do, step by step
Where it’s relevant and can be reached safely, the roof space is checked as well as the outside. In the loft, the signs we look for are staining, damp, daylight and sagging, as far as the space allows. The whole visit usually takes an hour or two for most houses; commercial roofs usually need 3–4 hours. For a village or hamlet like Berrick Salome, the journey is planned in advance: let us know about lanes, gates and parking. On the day, we inspect what can be seen safely, inside and out.
- You tell us where you’ve seen overflows, drips or damp.
- The eaves gutters, downpipes and fascias are checked from ground level and windows.
- Valleys, parapets and box gutters are inspected where they can be seen safely.
- Where it’s safe, we check the loft for signs of water.
- You receive a report with photos and recommendations.
Before the survey

Advice
What affects the cost of gutter surveys
When we price a survey, we consider:
- The package you choose: Basic, Standard or Premium
- Building height and the viewpoints available
- The number of roofs, including extensions and garages
- How complicated the roof is, with its valleys, chimneys and parapets
Thermal imaging and drone inspection (where applicable) come with the Premium Survey, which starts from £400, inc. VAT. We will tell you which package suits the questions you have.
Booking your survey
What helps most when you contact us:
- When you need the report by
- The property’s address and postcode
- What kind of property and roof it is
- How the loft is reached, if there is one
Surveys can be booked for weekdays, Saturdays or Sundays. To arrange a day that suits you, call 07833 053749 or use the contact form.
When you need someone else
In fairness, there are limits to any roof survey:
- Rot or damp concealed behind fascias or inside walls
- Whether a material contains asbestos (a specialist asbestos surveyor’s job)
- Blockages deep inside downpipes
If you’re not sure which survey you need, ring 07833 053749 or email us and we’ll give you a straight answer before you book. The full list of what we check.

Checking the roof from the ground
You can learn a lot from the ground. With binoculars, look for slipped or missing slates and tiles, gaps along the ridge and leaning chimneys. Please don’t climb up for a closer look.
After heavy rain, check ceilings and the tops of walls for new stains. Take a photo and write down when you saw it.
